Hi;
I am a new member, although I have lurked in the site to try and learn as much as I can.
I've got a used dvx100 and just finished this film short. Zero budget, scripted, filmed, and edited by me.

I would really appreciate it if you could take 5 min. to view "Beer".

Being an amatuer, I really do need the feedback on whatever stands out, shot framing, flow, cuts, music, story, editing, etc.
I know lighting is an issue. Wow, it is hard to do. I'll have to save the money to get the lighting DVD.

Thank you very much, and I'll appreciate your feedback.

No comments. Should only experienced shorts producers post here?
Or are you just polite. LOL. "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all."
I know I'm just a beginner. I can take the criticism.

The genre of my short "Beer", is funny SciFi.

I'd show it to friends & family, but they'll tell me it's great no matter what- just because I made it.
Bless their hearts.

i liked it. in no particular order, the things i liked most were the graphics, the script and the acting, especially the dad. The pacing could maybe be tightened up a little. in the beginning the relationship (spatioally) of the two characters was a bit unlear. it didnt seem like they were in the same room at first. it did make me laugh, for the right reasons. you did really well overall for a first effort, if that is what this is. the main thing is that you thought of an idea and started it and finished it. keep it up.

I'm not a pro but I'll try ;) First off cudos to you for jumping in and trying to make something. Anything. The guys I work with are literally the pioneers in SOV no-budget film making and I appreciate and respect the effort it takes to do it. On that note I'll be a little critical but only in the spirit of trying to help ;)

Yes lighting, focus and color correction do stand out a little. But it is really hard to judge based on the medium. It seems like it's really compressed for the web and has a lot of artifacts so it hard to judge the quality. Some of the 2/3 shot framing seems a little forced to me. The set could have been more detailed. It looked like it was shot in an empty old house or trailer and very minimally dressed. In the no-budget world it's always the little things that make or break it IMO.

I thought the concept was interesting and I really appreciated the effect of the drunk in the bottle. If you liked the experience of making it and learned something than that's all that counts. Keep shooting and making what inspires you. There is no substitute for experience.

Thank you kindly for the response to my post and for taking the time to view my short. And for your encouragement.
I really didn't know if my story 'sucked' or not. Just because I like it certainly doesn't mean it's any good. LOL

The actors generously donated their time. I didn't want to put them in credits unless they approve first.

Do you mean during the editing? I am still learning to do editing. I still have the video in my editing software, and can still work on the cuts somewhat.

Wow, you are right, I never thought of that. But when I look at it now I can see that the establishing scene should have been filmed with a long shot of the son entering the room where the father is drinking.

I tried fixing those issues in my editing software, but found it very difficult. I can definately see how headaches will be avoided by getting these things correct in the first place, while filming. LOL

Thanks for pointing this out. It is the first time I'v ever converted and uploaded a video. I've since read that not all conversion software is the same, and some do a better job than others at converting to FLV.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what this means. By 'forced', do you mean they didn't look natural, or?

Yes I see, it should have been more natural/real looking. I was initially just concerned about not cluttering it up. LOL
