Shooting with letterbox option turned on

Are there any cons to shooting with letterbox mode enabled in the dvx100? (versus doing letterbox in post). It was brought to my notice that while doing CC, if the video is already letterboxed then the black at the top and bottom becomes gray. Any pros of doing letterbox in post?

Thanks!

If you think you want to end up with a letterboxed look, your better off doing that in post. 1) You have the option of having a full 4:3 picture if you change your mind, or if someone prefers a full 4:3 version rather than a letterboxed version. 2) If you want to change the matte size from say 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 or 2.35:1 then you just have to change an option. 3) A lot of people prefer the ability to re-frame in post. If you decide you want a 1.85:1 matte but a whole lot of headroom, all you have to do is adjust the offset. And as far as color correction goes, all you have to do is have the widescreen matte be bottom most filter when looking at the list in the filters menu. Then you won't have to worry that if you start to adjust your color tints to be a bit more red the actual black bars won't start tinting towards red.

do what macintosh says. just block off your viewfinder/field monitor with the aspect you'll crop to in post.
