Shooting widescreen in SD

I have a dance recital on the schedule actually 3 in one day at the same location recording with two HPX170's.
I don't have enough P2 card storage for all three performances recording in HD. I would like to record in SD in widescreen mode (the same aspect as HD but in SD (to save space) so when the customer puts the DVD in the player it plays widescreen not SD with pillars.

Do you just set the camera widescreen? I don't have the camera in front of me so I can't remember the exact menu. One says w/s, squeeze etc.

You should look into the HD pn modes, it saves a lot of card space. See pic.
If you shoot SD, at least do DV50 mode.Screen Shot 2013-06-05 at 9.21.13 AM.jpg

DVCPRO 50 takes up 25% more space than 720/24pN and twice as much space as DV. Just FYI.

nklaeser, keep in mind that SD widescreen and HD widescreen are slightly different; SD widescreen is slightly wider. You will notice this in post when you see thin black bars in one or the other.

It's PROPORTIONALLY wider. You will see this when you try to match them at the same frame size on the same timeline.
Shouldn't be. TV widescreen is 16:9, end of story. Width:height ratio is 16:9.

Easier to see in the HD formats because of square pixels - the ratios of h, v pixel counts are also 16:9.

If the SD picture isn't 16:9, there's something wrong with the pixel aspect ratio.
