Shooting VLOG with 709 monitor lut on?

I’ve shot a lot of Sony slog 3 video with the fs7. A simple way to use slog 3 was to record log to the camera, while putting the lcd monitor set to rec 709. This way, your log graded in post will look like what you see in the lcd monitor without it being baked in. I would just set my white card to just under 100 percent zebra and slog 3 would be exposed pretty well.

Is it safe to record v-log the same way: record VLOG, but monitor 709 and put the white card at just under 100ire?

Only tiny issue I see, is that the Eva 1’s waveform and zebras seem to only be showing the levels of the v-log, not the levels of the rec 709 lut on the monitor. To deal with this, I’ve just been using an external monitor with a wave form or zebra on it to place my white card at just 100 ire (or use zebra).

Just trying to come up with a simple workflow.

Thanks!

Fortunately, the exposure tools of the EVA1 reflect the recorded footage, not the LUTed footage on the monitor.
But 100% IRE is never reached in V-Log with tthe EVA1 as it is never reached with SLog2/3 on the FS7.

A white card should never be just under 100% IRE. That is simply wrong!
White is usually defined as 90% input reflectance. The correct IRE level would be 61% IRE in V-Log.
That is the exact same value that is defined for SLog3 by the way.

But you should read the other threads about exposure and values:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?358748-Accurate-V-Log-Exposure-and-Clipping-values

It's all in there and you can read all the info in the white papers.

In no way did I say white levels, while monitoring vlog should be at 100 ire. I said that with slog 3, you could monitor with a rec 709 lut on in the monitor (not baked in) and that you could put the white card at just under 100 ire when scoping that rec 709 image and that the log image would be exposed nicely. It was a simple way to be able to know what the slog3 image would look like with the rec 709 lut added in post without any additional grading. It makes you a little less of a slave to scopes. I was asking if that work flow would be ok with the EVA1.

I guess you are saying NO? With vlog, what zebra level would you put your white card at?

I don't use zebra that much to be honest.

I like the waveform to see what's really going on.
I use zebra only to avoid clipping if possible.

As I'm a doco shooter most of the time, there's no time to use a grey/white card at all.
But with 14 stops DR I think this won't give me much of a headache.

Gotcha. So what are the waveform levels you are looking for in a vlog image? Just getting your method of quickly exposing v log in a run and gun doc workflow?

There's no general "This is how the waveform should look like".

Depending on your actual scene, I try to expose relatively high to avoid unneccessary sensor noise.
But I'll always stay below clipping and sometimes I stay much darker if the scene needs it.

One can say that I do ETTR sort of, but not if it doesn't make sense for me (night shots, dark forest with sky leakage...).
