Shooting video with your lens DETACHED

Ok I'm seeing this technique here in this video http://vimeo.com/12001117

the guy says that he detached his lens and just kept it real close to the sensor while having the lens set to infinity. That is how he was able to achieve the look.

I asked him some questions about it, and he said it was ok, But i want a second opinion from some of you more experienced guys.

Is this dangerous to the sensor when you record video with your lens detached? It provides for some awesome light leaks and flares that way, but how much does it damage the sensor? Or does it have no negative side effects ?

Also, how would you go about doing that anyway... turn ON the camera first and start recording and THEN detach the lens? Or just detach it, hold it close to the sensor and THEN turn it on and hit record.

Thanks

I just did it. Just don't be an idiot. Take the lens off, flip the mirror, start shooting. It isn't really close to the sensor.

Yea, if this is going to be a regular shooting style for you, set aside some cash to get your sensor cleaned every now and again because dust will inevitably become a problem.

the dust is exactly why I raised this question and seems like I was right in doing so as some of you folks acknowledge it as well.

The guy in the video who did this effect, said that he's done it many times and his answer to the dust was "a quick air clean now and then and all is good."

I don't know...

the one thing I'm more concerned about is light hitting the sensor and if there are any great dangers to that. Obviously I'm not going to detach the lens and point the sensor straight at the sun... but just light leaks in general, do they do any harm to the sensor?

Would you point a lens attached to your camera straight at the sun?

Would you point a lens attached to your camera straight at the sun?...

yes I do...

I think that concept is harping back to tube systems in video.... I'm not sure you can cook a sensor from the sun...

I think Spot welding is probably brighter and I would not hesitate to shoot a wielder...

I've lost a camera back in the early 80's after shooting a wielder... but that was 15 years ago...

Cheers

sunlight hitting the sensor directly should not harm it, remember a lens intensifies the sunlight which is less than direct sunlight and I've shot the sun a bunch of times
