Shooting things in motion...

Hey all,

Still trying to figure out all of the settings and stuff on my 100A. So, obviously I'm most excited about using the 24p mode, and it looks really great...

I'm wondering though about when you shoot things in motion, and then when watching it back on a computer, when something moves, there are those little motion lines on the screen where the object moves...

I was wondering if this was just a digital thing? Or, I am using just a standard tape, and not the 63MQ tapes...would that make a difference? Or...what setting is it on the camera that deals with smoother motions in filming?

Thanks.

Re: Shooting things in motion...

It sounds like you are refering to interlace lines. If you are shooting in any progressive mode, you should not see these lines. What are you using to view your footage. Are these before rendering in your NLE, during your NLE preview or after you have rendered the file from your NLE? The tape won't have anything to do with interlace lines, but you should stick with one tape with this camera, preferably the 63MQ tapes.

Re: Shooting things in motion...

I am seeing them while watching it in my NLE program, and I am seeing it just when watching it on Windows Media Player...

Could it have something to do with my Microsoft DV Capture codec or something?

Re: Shooting things in motion...

Are you shooting in F5 or F6 mode? 24p or 24pa? If you are filming in 24pa you need to remove the pulldown and edit in a 23.98 fps timeline. The lines you are talking about are possibly from that. Otherwise they would be interlaced.

Re: Shooting things in motion...

It might have to do with the video overlay or playback of the NLE. If it can't display the full raster, it may split the full frame into segmentd frames (1/2 frames - similar to fields) and youmight see some artifacts on the edges. This is just a playback issue in the NLE.

Re: Shooting things in motion...

Are you shooting 24p or 24pa...I know you said 24p but sometimes people get confused...

Re: Shooting things in motion...

I had a similar issue when I first got my DVX.. I shoot alot of motion footage.

Having a PAL DVX I had the problems whilst shooting in f1 50i mode. Changing to f5 25P stopped the "motion lines" as you describe.

Thats alll I remember doing.. it stopped the weird lines I was getting and now it looks sweet.

Newbs 2cents worth.

Re: Shooting things in motion...

See, I totally think you are filming in 24pa and you dont realize it. Remove the pulldown and edit in a 23.98 fps timeline...try that...it should work...

Re: Shooting things in motion...

Okay so here's my question...

How should I set up the project properties in Vegas 4.0 to get the best output possible?
