Shooting Squeeze mode

Got a client who wants to shoot to tape for footage that is going to be i integrated into an hd project.

Timelines in NLE will be hd resolution and 16 X 9.

Best way to do this is to shoot squeezed to tape... (I'm pretty sure???}

Anyone have any further explanation or tips.

Yes squeeze to tape. thats the Highest quality Anamorphic 16:9 DV the HVX us capable of.

I thought that by shooting squeeze you get all the pixel info (720 x 480) in a 16 x9 world, but apparently it's a digital strech of

720x360.

Seems like they would know. But it's still seems the best way to shoot if youre going to 16 x 9 world.

What do you think?

Thats a prblem in panasonics naming scheme. In the DVX100 series, yes its a 720x360 extraction.

in the HVX200 its a Down res from 1080p in camera, to 16:9 anamorphic squeeze 720x480.

Same name, two VERY different processes. the HVX's 16:9 anamorphic DV looks glorious. The DVX's 16:9 anamorphic DV looks "ok".

I'm still a little iffy on this. I think youre saying that you get all 720 480 pixels when it get's into a 16 x 9 timeline.

Here's a link that disagrees, but I likw you're version better.

Remeber I'm shooting to dv tape is that down rez even possible to tape?

Thanks for sparring.

Nice article with some great quotes ("it's like someone time-traveled to the future and brought the HVX back") There were a couple of minor things that should be corrected (i.e., he shows the HVX 1080 frame as being 1440 x 720, which it totally isn't, it's 1280 x 1080 (in US versions, in PAL territories it's 1440x1080). But as far as his description of squeeze mode goes, I think you misread it; the author describes it accurately.

In the HVX, squeeze mode is created by taking the entire internal 1920x1080 image and downrezzing it to 720x480 anamorphic.

In the DVX, it uses the central 720x360 image and digitally stretches it up to 720x480 (the author incorrectly uses the numbers "320x480"; the actual number is 720 x 360). But the point remains the same, the DVX digitally stretches and "uprezzes" a smaller portion of its chip into a bigger frame, whereas the HVX does the opposite, downrezzing a huge frame to squeeze into the standard-def frame size.

So "squeeze" in the DVX is a very, very different thing from "squeeze" in the HVX. The DVX artificially uprezzes, the HVX does an HD downrez.

EDIT: DOH! I just read the "about the author" segment and it's from none other than our own "Andy Starbuck"! That guy makes awesome posts, no wonder the article was so well written!

Wow that guy writes with such gusto but has some errors. Most of his info is correct, but some major thigs are VERY wrong. especially when talking bout the DVCproHD subsampling.

anyhow... dont worry... The HVX is SUPER sharp in 16:9 dv.

Sharp enough for ya?

Barry disregard half of my last pm.

Tim,

Let me get this straight. That screen grab was shot in Squeeze mode then put into a 16 by 9 dvc pro hd timeline?

Because that might be my exact scenario.

FJ

Tim,

OK i get it. DVC Pro 50.

But i still want to make sure of one thing. Shot squeeze mode, not letterbox!

Correct or Incorrect.

Time to put this convo to bed and shoot some tests before I get in front of my client.

Thanks all.

Yes, sqeeze mode. It's the full 720x480. NOT letterbox.

If you're planning to integrate into an HD timeline, be sure your V. Freq Detail is set to Thin. (Progressive only, though -- the option is blued out in 60i.)

Squeeze. Squeeze Squeeze!!! haha.

Yes its scary, to think somethign crappy and something awesome have thesame name in two cameras of the same line. but trustme, Squeeze mode in the HVX is GREAT. ( the DVCpro50 stuff was shot in Squeeze as well)

It should never have actually been called "squeeze" on the DVX, either -- what it does is actually STRETCH the footage vertically.

But in both cases, it's called "squeeze" because the footage will appear squeezed horizontally if you were to play it raw on a standard TV.

Hey guys.

I've read 10 threads on Normal/Squeeze/Letterbox for the HVX that is going to DVD.

And there are multiple recommendations.

So which do I use for the following:

This afternoon i'm shooting auditions/interviews that will go on a DVD per each audition/performer. Very little edit...just need the best quality I can from ingest into FCP and right out to the DVD.

Thinking: Filmmode; 480/24pa; DVCPRO50; cine V (unless there is a better way...like maybe video mode at 30p???)

It need to be 16:9 on the DVD. Who knows what the casting directors will watch on...could be wide screen tv or 4:3.

Whoops!

I've been searching threads all morning...when the answer is in the HVX Book. (page 143)

Squeeze = 16:9 native. Normal and Letterbox are 4:3.

Tape is an older part of the thread ...i'm shooting to P2 with DVCPRO50 which only shoots to P2.

Had a good afternoon. Shot 5 x 16gb cards full. Just reallized it takes longer to dump a 16gb than it does an 8gb...duh.

DVCPRO50 is already looking good in post...but man oh man...I could have done 720/24pn and used less GB. FCP/Compressor could handle the down res to put on a DVD.

Lesson = let the hardware do the work.

DV Rack HD2 was the monitor...handled "squeeze" mode well.
