Shooting Solar Eclipse with DVX100B

Hello All,

I will be travelling to Ghana , Africa to shoot the solar eclipse at the end of this month. I was wondering if anybody can reccommend a filter for best videotaping the eclipse w/ the DVX100B. Also, do you think the built-in ND filters will be enough to get exposure or should I buy something with higher gradiation to screw on the front of the camera. I think during totality I probably will have no trouble getting exposure but I'm worried about being overexposed during the pre/post eclipse phases.

Thank You in Advance,

I would do some testing before you commit to using the DVX for the eclipse.
You might not be able to fill the frame with the sun. The DVX just doesn't have enough telephoto reach.

An XL2 might be better in this situation with the 20x lens.

As far as exposure goes, I would get a couple ND filters to screw on.
You could could also go to a higher shutter speed.
1/2000 of a second will really stop down the lens.
But then you'll introduce those dreaded "lines" (I forget what you call it), when the light source causes vertical lines during high speed shutter use.

Thanks Bill,

I dont have much of an option with the camera. It has to be the DVX100B. Is there any type of convertor I can get in order to increase my zoom ability. Good suggestion on the shutter speed.

Any other suggestions out there?

By pure chance, I will also be in Ghana for the total eclipse. I also happen to have a DVX100 so this thread is v useful to me !

I would recommend you buy some additional ND filters and stack them in front of the lens. Practice shooting directly into the sun and trying to get a reading that's less than f16. If you can do that, you will be in good shape to shoot the eclipse.

If you are not careful about this kind of thing, you could damage your camera.
