Can anyone suggest some setting for shooting MX? I shoot a lot of motorcycle races and have a relatively lame understanding of shutter speed. can someone help break it down?
thanks ! Wendy, Madison, WI

shoot with a high shutter, assuming the race is during the day you should have enough light to shoot a real high shutter like 1/500 and you will get crisper motion from the bikes with less motion blur

faster shutter speeds produce choppy motion which adds a certain intensity to the shot. it's great for fast action sports, hectic chase scenes, heavy metal music videos, etc.

anything 1/250 or faster really shows this effect and should only be used if you are absolutely sure this is the look you want. this effectively removes motion blur completely and will always look stroby.

with that said, if i were shooting mx and had the available light. i would go fast shutter.

here is an mx thing i shot on the dvx. it was at night and not lit enough for fast shutter so i shot standard 1/48 shutter. still looks pretty cool.

I shoot my mx footage in 30p at 120 shutter. I wouldn't go any else than 120 if shooting action. As far as the 30p, thats a personal preference.

Are you going to be at the AMA Millville, MN motocross race two weeks from now? If so, I might just see you there. Take Care, Jason
