Shooting P2 and dumping to tape

Hey all...I am curious about this selling point :

" Internal down conversion and frame rate conversion from HD source recorded on P2 card to Mini-DV tape"

How does this work,.....ie....does the camera compress the DVCproHD footage to an HDV format? Or does is downconvert the 1080 to 720 for putting on the tape.....

I am chomping at the bit for this camera, but work with someone who has a z1 and we do alot of field shooting. I am trying to keep as HD as possible until SD delivery (especially if mixing footage with the z1)......Not being able to have a 1080 signal I can put to tape is a bit of a downer.....I want to stay in the "high" rez range the z1 offers, but not be bound to p2..(unless p2 gets bigger cheaper)

Any ideas??
thanks

It converts down to DV. 16x9 DV I believe. Maybe 4x3 as well, but not sure on that. It doesn't do 720 which is HD. It also doesn't do HDV.

As far as longer shooting times, would be best to wait for the firestore/cineporter or to firewire to a powerbook. The larger and cheaper P2 cards will take some time. However, if you are happy with the Sony then might be best to stick to that. I personally don't think the sony is in the Panny league. The sony looks too videolike, seems to be so blunt and sharp without the nice softness and pleasing look. It also doesn't do slow-mo or timelapse. I was looking to get the cheap 1 chip for exactly that.. it's cheap.

The panny might not be for you, but certainly it is with most of the people here.

I totally agree that the sony is not in the same league...unfortunatly I work alot for some old school geezers who think HDV is the bomb....I think it looks like hyper real composited shots....my non tech wife thinks it looks "weird"....

I sure wish there was a solution to downconvert to HDV for tape acquisition.....at least to be able to work on the same timeline in an NLE with HVX footage and Z1 footage.

thanks for the info

well mano, I've heard that mixing HDV and DVCPRO can be a bit squirrely and buggy when it's on the same timeline. You would probably want to convert it all to the same codec prior to dealing with the footage. You do have some tape options but they are really expensive. That HD deck is 30K and it rents for 600 a day.

If tape is what you need then stick with the sony. You'd also need to make sure that the two cameras would match well. I have several canons and they don't match well with Sony's unless I do a lot of post. Have you checked out that one chip with XLR's and phantom power? B and H has a special now for 2k.

As far as the panny stuff, I'm mostly getting it for narrative work and for some sports stuff I'm doing. I will also shoot the mini DV in the meantime. I think it would still look sharp in 16x9.

I'm biting the built on this. Just hope it's not a dead format like that D-9 business. A friend of mine got that camera and what a hunk of crap. No one supports the format and he paid like 18k for it.

Please.. please.. hope the 200 doesn't go the way of the do-do (sp).

Thanks for the heads up on mixing footage........I'm still planning on the Pani.....and I think it will be around as long as the DVX has........not bad for an under 10k quality camera......
Now to get Sony Vegas to handle .mxf files......
later

Do any of the HDV cameras do analog to Digital conversion like some of the DV cameras do? So you could take an analog stream from another HD source and compress to HDV on tape? Not the ideal concept but just wondering if it is possible?

THX

Yeah, good one....I can use the z1 as a deck for the HVX200......that's probably the best way to get enjoyable images to tape on a z1.....
lol

Not possible. No HDV product (deck or camera) has analog HD inputs.

Hey Barry......do you see any HD to tape conversion upgrades on the HVX in the near future? (not that compression to a lesser format is an upgrade.....)? In the event one would want to shoot 1080 for longer than 16 minutes handheld......but could live with some compression??
thanks

(I spose I'm speculating on an HVX200a)

I don't see that happening. Panasonic has said they will never put HDV on their system. I wouldn't be surprised if a future HVX200A removed the tape drive completely.

Bigger cards are their plan, plus FireStore and CinePorter. Either method will get you longer recording times.
