Shooting Overcrank

I'm having an issue with sync when editing footage I shot. I have footage shot at both 1920x1080 and 1280x720. All the footage was shot at 29.97, the 720 footage I overcranked at 60/30. I have edited two sequences one in XDCAM and one at ProRes, both at 1920x1080 and everything is fine when they play back, the sync is right on in the external monitor.

However, when I edit the same footage in a timeline that is 1280x720 my monitor is WAY out of sync. I want to edit at 1280x720 since MOST of the footage in the spot was shot at 720. Also the only shot at 1080 I want to scale up and zoom in a bit, so I figured editing in a 720 timeline will give me more latitude. The audio for the spot is coming from the footage shot at 1080, the video from the footage shot was at 720 in overcrank. Only one scene has both the audio and video that was shot at 1080, and by the time that scene plays it is out of sync in the 720 timeline.

I have tried many things to fix this sync issue. I have an AJA KONA LH control panel, which is set at a 720p format, same as the output on my FCP control panel. I have tried switching to different setting on both and have not gotten the 720 timeline to go in sync.

Sounds like an Aja or FCP issue, not a PMW-F3 issue.

You don't provide enough details to lock down the problem either.

But a valid work around would be to edit in 1080, and downconvert the final back to 720. Or - work in 1080, export the final audio, and export the EDL, then import the EDL in 720p, and avoid the up/down scale.

Have you tried playing it just to your internal speakers/desktop display? The timing issue may only effect your external hardware, and not the project files themselves...

I didn't think it had anything to do with the footage. I was looking for an easy solution in editing. It definitely has to do with the up/down scaling. But I thought FCP would handle that in the timeline without a sync issue.

I guess my question would be do I need to shoot the 1080 at 59.94 since the 720 footage is shot at 29.97 but is actually 59.94 because of the over crank? I really like the look of 29.97, so is there an easier solution to make all this match in editing?

Well, you called it overcrank. If you were shooting XDCAM-EX 720 30p and then selected to overcrank to 60p, the camera should internally conform the footage to 29.97 (30p) for playback. If it's actually playing back at 60p than that's not overcranking.

But if there is a conforming issue you can use Cinema Tools to conform footage.

That said, if the audio is from the 1080p clip and you have it lined up with the 1080p clip in the sequence, it shouldn't fall out of sync. That could be a hardware playback issue. Have you tried doing an export render, or just playing back internally (ie - cut the Aja & external monitor & speakers out of the loop)?

This might be better answered in a Hardware or Editing/FCP forum.
