Shooting on tapes

Not at all because you can learn about using/operating the camera by just shooting DV meantime.

Is it a waste to buy the camera if you don't plan on shooting on P2 cards right off the bat??

I got mine a week ago and have to wait for Panasonic to ship the P2 card,
so tapes are it for now. Image quality is great (but not as good as DVCpro 50) and ots of features are not usable with tape such as time lapse, over and undercrank, etc. If I were never going to buy a P2 card I would have bought the DVX instead. Nice to have tape as an alternative if unable to use p2 for whatever reason.

Yeah I'm planning on getting the free one and buying another one but not right away, so I will probably be shooting on tapes for a little while.

i'd say that there's plenty of learning to do on the hvx, even in tape only mode.

master shooting on tape first, your media costs will nill and when you're ready to go to p2, the costs of that media could only be lower than they are today.

i used to shoot for a pbs affiliate years ago using a sony bvw-400 beta sp cam w/ "real" lenses. the complexity of the hvx in hd / p2 modes is somestimes daunting so i'd say enjoy learning the 'lower end' of the camera's capabilities first. you'll probably be better prepared that way when you do end up diving into the complexities of p2 and the plethora of modes it is capable of.

hth!
