Shooting neutral or affected...

I really like the image I get when I put the master ped to about -4 or -5, but a friend told me not to shoot that way because you can just do it in post. If I am CERTAIN I will crush the blacks (Hitler-esque?) in post, why not shoot with the settings I like IN-camera and light for those settings? I usually set everything at "0" BTW.

Are there any pros/cons to shooting that way? Would you recommend/not recommend doing this?

Thanks, LL

Just do it in camera! I dont know what your friend is talking about. If you dont like it when you are shooting it then keep it at zero but if you know that you want those blacks crushed then go for it. CC does degrade the image depending on what you are doing.

I keep mine at -10 to -15 depending on lighting.

First off, MASTER PED is not just for asthetics, it's for calibration as well. For proper video, it should be set to -5 or -6 in most circumstances, or your just wasting bits capturing the noise floor. And that's just to get nice true blacks, it has nothing to do with crushing the blacks. Go further than -6 to actually crush some blacks.

Well, pros are that you dont have to crush the blacks anymore in edit proccess..

Cons are, if you want to edit your look more darker, you lose details in blacks and blacks look too crushed.. And you have more of "one way" material to edit..

You can easily achieve in post excatly the same effect that master ped does..
It gives you more freedom afterwards if you dont crush the blacks in cam..

I think the in cam options (color temp, master ped, etc) are really poor and too simple to make your footage look good. There are some nice stuffs that you can play with, but the options are too basic to fully rely on..
Usually (= always) the macig happens in post process.. Thats why its important to have clean (not too saturated, not crushed, not burn out, etc) material to work with as it gives the best freedom in post..

If you have time to play with options, try to film with -8 ped and +3 ped and then play around in your edit soft with curves, contrast, color gradin and other things and see which works best for your situation.. :)
