Shooting Music Video

This is probably in the wrong froum, so please move if need be. Alright, i am going to be shooting my first trial music video in a couple weeks, and i had a couple questions. First, what is the easiest way to shoot the video so that when i get back into editing it is easy to sync up the audio with the "actor" who is singing.. Also, i normally shoot 60i with my dvx 100b, and i was thinking about shooting 24p or 24pa? I am not all that familiar with 24p so i wasnt sure if i was going to have to shoot in such a so i didnt get motion blur or things like that. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Shoot 24p or pa unless you want to go for the vibe of 60i (more handycam looking imo)

Get the song... if you can, import the song in soundtrack pro or even garage band, find out the tempo of the song and make a click track (like a metronome) that clicks with the beat of the song. The clicks are visually easy to see on the sound track line of the footage. From there you can sync the original track really well. Another plus factor is the drummer can hear the clicks over the drums and other sound going on, to play in time with the song.

Depending on the amount of light you have and shutter angle, you shouldn't have a problem with horrible motion blur.

awesome, thanks for the info. So you are saying to take the actual song into Garage band or sound track pro, put the clicks in, and export the song, that way when we are filiming, the camera is picking up the audio of the clicking version of the song so it will be easy to sync?

do 24p or pa, the band would really dig the film look. Also another tip for you, have the drummer fill his drums with packing peanuts (styro foam). This will muffle the drums so he can hit them with some force but not drown out the CD on set. You can also add some gaff tape to the bottoms of the cymbals and that will dampen them as well.

I am doing a music video for a rock band pretty soon. Good tips on the drummer.

I saw the specifications Much Music wants for a video, 4:3, coloring, that sorta thing, but what about frame rate? If my music video gets on TV, does it HAVE to be 30p? I hate 30p with a passion, and im a 24pA shooter. I was planning on shooting this video 24pA. But on TV?

Thanks

maybe you thought all television was 60i. interlaced video is more common than progressive (well, at least it use to be). either way, if they don't specify a frame rate don't worry about it.

wow, thanks for all the great info, but i am still a lilttle unsure about the syncing audio part. Nomadic had mentioned adding beats through garage band.. is there any other/better way?

if the band recorded in a studio, they might be able to rip you a copy of the song with the click track on it... most bands record to click tracks anyway

If you don't go the click track route, it's not gonna be much harder. I've done a few without a click track and I haven't had any problems syncing in post. As long as you have the song during the shoot so that the band can play along to it you should be fine with just that.
