Shooting live events

Hello again everyone, I have aroused a new question that i have been pondering for a good time now. I am wondering if it is possible to do a multi-camera shoot of a live event and capture live by just connecting all the cameras into a computer via fire wire and then using some program that would look similar to a video mixer but right on the computer, so you could capture and mix right on the computer.

The mix would be a huge bonus but is there even any way to just capture direct live footage from multiple cameras simultaneously connected fire wire into a computer?

i use the video toaster at work (comcast public access station) it works well for the most part, has its bugs every now and then. We switch live to tape which works out most of the time but can bring up some problems if you miss something important you have no way of retrieving it. It gets the job done, so if you dont mind dropping the cash for it, go for it.

Correction: OnLocation can monitor and record only one device at a time. Support for handling multiple streams simultaneously is on our list of proposed features.

If you're working with standard def cameras, take look at Adobe Visual Communicator 3 ($399, http://www.adobe.com/products/visualcommunicator/?promoid=DJDXK). It supports switching among 3 cameras (but records only one stream at a time).
