Shooting into the sun/sunset

Hey guys,

I've seen in the manual about precautions about shooting into the sun damaging the sensor. I don't think this will matter at all for pictures since the shutter will open and close so quick. But what about in Liveview when recording video and the shutter is staying up?

I have a sunset shoot today and though it will be some cool shots (hopefully), I don't want to fry my 5d's sensor.

Any thoughts or preparations I should do?

Thanks,
Andy

Thanks, guys. Good to know. I was getting a little nervous because I was scouting the location yesterday before sunset and the sun was really beaming down, but I expect it to be less intense at actual sunset.

Best,
Andy

After working with over 40 photojournalists for years who used company gear I have to say that you REALLY must have to try hard to fry a CCD. I have seen almost every other camera problem...never a fried CCD or light meter though.

It's IR that does the damage, which is why it will burn shutter blinds as well as your eyes. The sensor has an efficient IR blocking filter over it, so will be less susceptible to damage.
I'd still do with the ND filters though.

I shoot into the sun frequently but I usually am stopped down a bit (gives the cool sunflare effect). I would not shoot straight into the sun wide-open for any length of time if you are on the planet Mercury.
