Shooting in "Wide Record" Normal DV Mode

Im shooting on wide record normal DV mode. This I guess is not true
16:9? The final edit of the project will be 16:9. I heard I should be shooting in normal 4:3 rather then this wide record mode. Why?
And for capturing this wide record DV footage what would the imput setting be (48hz anamorphic)??
Im confused. I like shooting in this wide record mode but if it's not good to edit a 16:9 project i will just shoot 4:3 and then they will crop it.
Thanks
John

Wide record DV mode is true 16:9. If you're doing real 16:9, you should shoot with this wide record mode. If your editing software has a setting named 48kHz anamorphic, that should be the correct one for true 16:9.

I would like to agree with Satelliebunny that wide record normal DV mode is true 16:9

I have contacted sony directly and they told me that it is not true 16:9 but a anamorphic copy. Is this true?
Thanks For Help

what's the problem with shooting HD and output to SD? You'd be sure about the 16:9

Im just wondering if what Im shooting (HDR-FX1 in normal DV mode wide record) is going to be all right to edit as a 16:9 video.

Yes, shooting in wide record mode will give you a 16:9 image, and will be fine to edit as 16:9 (anamorphic).

Sony is correct in saying that when in DV mode you are not in a true 16:9 mode, but in an anamorphic mode.  The reason is because DV is set as 720x480 (NTSC), which as we all know is not a 16:9 aspect ratio!   ;)

Well, neither is 1440X1080, which the HDV mode records. 1920X1080 would be 16:9 with square pixels. In my terminology the 1440X1080 HDV is also anamorphic, even though there is no such thing as 4:3 HDV (atleast if you don't sidecrop).

I'm not sure what Sony told you, but the CCDs have a resolution of 960X1080 (with pixel shift they claim 1440X1080 effective resolution). When you downrez 960X1080 to 720X576 (PAL) you certainly get what some people might call "true 16:9" or "native 16:9" or "anamophic 16:9".
The only way to make "fake" 16:9 anamorphic is to have less pixels, let's say 720X432 for PAL letterbox, and then uprez those pixels to be anamorphic at 720X576 (I think this is the way XL1, DVX100A, and I suppose also PD150 work).

In fact there is a huge possibility in claiming that the HDV in FX1 isn't really true 16:9, as they use pixel shift, but that's another discussion.

If someone has more info on why the FX1 DV wouldn't be true 16:9, please feel free to correct any of my statements. :)
