Shooting in Korea w/a DVX100A (Not North)

Well...I've had my DVX100A for about a week now...feeling a bit overwhelmed by the lack of readiness I have for my first interview. I have an ME66 and the camera. And to be honest...I don't know what to do next. New to the DVX...new to filmmaking and new to the digital world...but learning soooo much from here and dvinfo.net. Can some kind DVX users lend a greenhorn a hand? A few questions I've been wondering...

1. Shooting a documentary about WWII and Koreans. Lots of interviews...do i need a field mixer? REcommend a lav or shotgun? Mostly shooting in controlled enviornments...indoor.

2. I plug in my monitor headphones into the headphone jack of the camera and it sounds soooo bad....a lot of hissing? Do i need special headphones or is this "hissing" normal?

3. What are some good scene file settings for film-like pictures with soft skin tones?

4. What accesories do you recommend for shooting documentary? Again, I have the camera and an ME66....thats it :)

5. And lastly, I'm making this for education purposes that will be transfered only to DVD. Any suggestions on setup so that I dont get to post and freak out because I forgot to do something :)

Thanks for your time. A great forum!

Best Wishes
Korea Boy :D

Get a Tripod! You'll probobly want to use a lav mic for the interviews. Mixer is not a necessity. Not sure what the hissing sound would be. Make sure your mike setting are correct.

As for the scene file settings, I'd experiment before shooting. Set up some test interviews under similar light situations and try different setting to see which ones you like and don't like.

hook the dvx up to a calibrated monitor and adjust your settings to where u want them to be...

the hiss sound is normal panasonic raised the levels on the 100a i guess so you could here other interfernce without having to have ure headphones up too high...it will record to tape perfectly fine...

I sencond the tripod...get a good head as well manfrotto 503 with the 3181 stix....what i use quick set up is nice...also get a tripod bag and strap if ure gonna be doin some traveling

look into some eyelites...unless you will have access to a lighting kit of sorts...

You might want to set up some practice interviews with friends or neighbors before doing the real thing; this will give you a good idea of how long it takes to set up lights, what your footage will look like, the quality of your recording, etc.

A mixer is an invaluable tool. Getting a two- or four-channel mixer which has XLR input and outputs, and some sort of lit scale which shows you your noise levels for each channel will save you a lot of headaches in the future. If you absolutely must, the camera can be a primitive mixer, but you will get much better results with an external one.

I also think before the mixer he could get some lights (And the Tripod!!!).
Interview audio is just too basic for him to worry about a mixer. Aim the mic propperly, check your levels, and he is set...
