SHOOTING IN COLD WEATHER /Polar Mittens etc

I'm getting geared up to go from the wet rainforesty climate of Southeast Alaska to the far north, to the Arctic, for serious and humorous documentary about women hunting (from the perspective of a sometimes vegetarian).

Does anyone have experience with the Portra Brace Polar Mittens?
If it is between 10 and 30 degrees when we are there, is it necessary?
Any other suggestions for keeping batteries warm etc and care of gear from mics to tripods to heads on the camera?

Also has anybody used one of those Bogen pods with the DVX?

Also love my DVX but as everyone knows for far off shots of critters, it is not the best....

Welcome suggestions,
from a first time poster.
