Shooting in Clubs

First of all, I want to apologize if I am in the wrong forum. I am in the market to purchase a camcorder and have read nearing 10-15 articles and found that competition between the top 3 in my market, sony FX1? XL2, and the 100B to be extremely interesting and informative.

Has anyone had any experience shooting inside the club atmosphere? I was wondering how well the 100B works in this environment. The big issue for me right now is I love the quality of the Sony, but I almost cannot go without the audio imputs of the 100B.

Any additional inputs would be great!

Clubs normally have low lighting and different color bulbs correct? maybe that Article in the Articles section "3 way shoot out" will help you choose. Check it out.

Yes, Im shooting in Elixur in Rockford, IL right now with my 100b. You can buy the best camera on the market but it wont change the fact that the light in the club invironment in extreamly low.

Reccomendations- Light attatchment (amber bulbs or led's)
Any 3 chip camera will work fine. you dont really need 24p for clubs unless you really want a certain look.

not sure what you plans are for audio....but if you intend on using the camera for captuing say the audio of a band or performer that wouldn't really work unless you plan to have the mics onstage or near it and those cables running to the camera on a tripod.

If you doing handheld and running around capturing close up footage it would be hard to rangle the cable because you normally are dealing with people that are drinking.

If you know ahead of time, some sound guys have methods of capturing the audio through the sound board and even recording it to CD. ...very easy to resync with your footage if you at least capture through the camera mic reference audio.

You don't want those mics moving once in place since your audio will change constantly and you won't want that at all!

Good luck.

I appreciate everyones input on this so far. I guess I should clarify what are my intentions. I will be having the camera staged to record performances inside a club. There will obviously be low light, actually spot lighting on the performers which is all I care about. In regards to audio, I'm working on having one feed from the sound board, another feed from an overhead mic, and the third from the actual sound mic on the camera. Is that possible? The actual most important issue is to make sure the video that is recorded is good quality. I don't want it to look too noisy/grainy or look like it was shot with a camera phone.

These concerts will be corrected/edited in post using Premiere Pro and set on DVD. I hope that clears up any confusion and any additional experience anyone can shed on this.

Once again, I am really impressed with the amount of responses and time in them. Thanks again.

Justin

PS - I did read that 3 shootout article and it was great!

I've shot multiple concerts in dark clubs and the lights on the performers are generally fine to have an acceptable image. Just make sure that you white balance once and don't change it. The colored gels that are normally used like blue and red I have found makes focusing hard to you want to pay good attention if the performers are moving around.

Any thoughts on this producing somewhat high quality video for making concert DVD's and what not? Or should I go with something like the XH A1?

Thanks again!
