Shooting in 24p***

I've read a variety of articles giving the advantages and disadvantages of shooting in 24p. Most of them say that you want to stay away from shooting fast paced action, zooming in and out, and panning while shooting in this frame rate.

Is it really that bad to do so and why?

I see videos of extreme sports shot in 24p and they look wonderful!

Any thoughts?

It's mostly about how you move the camera.

Fast pans or fast zooms can produce a strobe in 24p footage, or any 24 fps footage, including cinematic film. This is because a slower frame rate takes pictures further apart in time, and there's more difference in location of moving objects between pictures. So, you'll notice a "jump" in the location between objects more. Panning, tilting, or zooming quickly makes this more apparent, because it makes an object's location further apart from frame to frame.

The slower the pan/tilt/zoom, the less of a difference in a location between pictures,, the less apparent "jump," and the smoother the motion.

It happens in 30p and 60i as well, you just have more leeway and it's less noticable. There are very few situations where that would actually come up, just don't whip the camera around all the time without a good reason or a decently thought out movement.
