I have shot a golf tour a couple times and the best thing is 1 master, 2 cover shots. That zooming on our camera aint that long so, do the best you can, and make sure you practice. I went to a drive range Hope this helps.
Don't try to find the ball on the LCD or EVF -- I think it would be best to mount some sort of optical viewfinder on the camera that can be used with both eyes open.
your only chance would be on a short par 3 hole say around 150-165yards other than that the shots you see on television are from a high crane or a blimp
Just finished 10 days shooting for The Golf Channel on BetaSP.
Stay tight and loose - oxymoron statement if there ever was one. Tight on the ball and loose on the tripod handle. I wouldn't be able to do it without a remote zoom and wouldn't recommend shooting eng style with the camera cradled in you arm on the sticks.
Previous poster was right about 150 or so yards. With the HVX 12x lens you're not going to be able to do as much as with a 16 or 20 x 8mm on a full size camera. I tend to use the viewfinder with peaking turned on and the chroma off - the white ball stands out better against a dark sky in b/w. Also have been known to use auto iris - it helps when you tilt up toward the bright sky - you'll learn to lead the ball and anticipate it's drift.
Another angle is behind the golfer and following ball flight as it leaves the tee box - side shots are no fun unless you're on a tower.
Repeat of another tip - practice a lot before it counts. It is a learned response but it does require practice.
