Shooting for Web Distribution

I have a project I'm shooting for a local filmmaker and it's a project slated for web distribution. The goal is to output the show as a quicktime movie and mp4--small 16:9 format for ipods and so it will be 320x240 letterboxed.

Would anyone have a recommendation for the best quality camera settings to use? And the edit workflow in FCP?

I have 2 4gb P2 cards. And of course DV tapes.

Thanks,
Kenneth

On the subject of format shooting, would folks post their chosen settings for different projects?

4:3 DVD?
16:9 Letterbox DVD?
HD DVD?
DVCPRO HD Tape for Festival Submissions?
Web?
Ipod?

Thanks,
Kenneth

I shoot in 720p for everything. If I'm going to produce a DVD, or for-the-web file, I just down-rez my final product after editing. That way I always have a HD master of everything I do.

If I don't feel like editing in 720p, I just down-rez the raw footage when I start, and then edit. I then keep the HD raw footage, so I could always re-edit a HD master if I wanted to.

I shoot and edit in 720p using Edius, and output three different formats:
  • 8Mbps 16:9 NTSC DVD
  • 1Mbps 16:9 640x360 Complex Profile WMV9
  • 1.5Mbps 16:9 640x360 QT/H.264
The latter two are obviously for the web, and while H.264 can deliver better video at the same bitrate than WMV9 can, for some reason when I set Quicktime up for 1Mbps video, I wind up getting something different, and I've given up trying to fight it. I'd love to get it to do what I ask it so more people have a chance of streaming the video, but for now I'm just happy to get the kind of quality it delivers.

If the Ipods take native 16x9.. then go that way unless you have to do the 4x3 letterboxed version. Online I do the same as THoff... 640x360. Looks sweet in 264.
