Hi,

I am about to shoot some footage which is destined for DVD. I'm just after some ideas on the best option for this format.
Are there advantages with shooting in progressive mode and then producing a progressive DVD, or is it better to shoot in a standard recording format?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Quin.

Re: Shooting for DVD?

This is an easy one: shoot 24PA, and edit in a 24P-aware program (like Vegas) for the best-quality DVD's.

Re: Shooting for DVD?

yes if you make a progressive DVD and the DVD player you play it on doesnt do progressive it will play just fine... it is similar to the way the DVX works putting 24p onto interlaced tape.

Re: Shooting for DVD?

There are two considerations progressive or interlace capture, then frame rate. With the DVX you can choose from eother category. Progressive (regardless of frame rate) will give you a mch better quality picture becuase you are using the full resolution of the vertical axis to represent the image.

Frame rate can be considered a creative choice. Shoot 24p when you want a film look becuaser of the motion resolution at 24fps compared to 30p, the 2:3 pulldown when played back at NTSC rates also gives you the look of a film to tape transfer.

But becuase the motion is captured at 24p some material may be better suited at 30p. If you feel the motion blur is not up to your taste, then try 30p. The additional advantage is that 24p will use 20% less disc space on the DVD for the same encoding rate. But if your program is less that an hour or so, that is not an issue.

24p is most of what I do becuse the projects I work on warrant the look and feel, but it shouldn't be an automatic choice because the camera can do it. Make the best use of frame rate and raster based on the program content.

Re: Shooting for DVD? But PAL!!!

I guess that for 25P PAL applies the same?
One consideration which have been numbing me is wheter choose 25p or 25pa for shooting to DVD .. BArry recomended 24pa. But why then exist 24p normal...or in my case..why then excist 25p normal?
