Why worry about framing it off? I shoot with a Carrion and don't make a decsion about final framing until I'm editing and then I place the 2.35 frame where it looks best. Of course, I'd love to get the Canon anamorphic adapter (about $25K at Wal-Mart) and then I'd be looking to block it off.... But I figure if I'm going to lose the resolution, at least take advantage of the best part of the take.
Why not just cut out a 2.35 frame of some plastic sheet and velcro it over the LCD? I think I would forgo the duct tape and use grip tape if you decide to go that routerogar-Dum(DBG):
I really hope you aren't recommending that Stormdave shoot his footage without framing it for 2.35:1 when he's shooting. To "Frame it in post" is really kind of cheap and results in an image that has not been thoughtfully composed during shooting.
I would never recommend this option for shooting with a different aspect ratio. Make yourself some aspect ratio marks on your camera (with 1/16" tape or something) and frame it right.
Not trying to bark at your reply, just trying to make sure Dave's footage is the way he wants it.
You could shoot a frame chart and mask off the LCD with semi-transparent tape, and if you really wanted to be cool... add some tape on the mirror inside of the viewfinder, just dont scratch it of course. (perform that at your own risk).
Understand what you're saying, especially with the change of look with the 2.35 framing. No offense taken, I was probably pointing out the obvious. I come from a still photography background and printing my own pictures. I always went for the best framing I could get in camera and then tweaked in the darkroom to deliver the best compostion possible. I think I view it as no different than color correction or other image manipulation.
