I have an upcoming shoot where I will be shooting fireworks at night with the HVX. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and/or any recommendations.

Thanks,

Yes.. It's a lot of fun.. I've shot fireworks a few times. In NH and also did it out at celebration and downtown at Lake Eola.

I'd say to make sure to crush your blacks in the cam so you can minimize the noise. A little CC in post also helps to make the contrast stand out. You can have a fast shutter if you'd like as they are so bright so there's some latitude there. I did some recently at 120 shutter and it looked awesome. In slow-motion though it's probably the best and really has impact.. then you might have to go with a slow shutter.

Other than that.. have your zebras on and don't let it blow out too badly... Allow for a nice low angle tripod shot depending upon proximity.

Here's some that I did in NH. Hope you enjoy:

Oh yes! - For anybody wanting to shoot fireworks (and some colorful street-parades) :

Next weekend it's Chinese New Year!

Check out your nearest "Chinatown" - - - - I'll go to LONDON!

Hey Kevin, great job on the fireworks3.mov. I was wondering what gamma curve you usually shoot with when shooting fireworks? I'm shooting a fireworks show with a cityscape behind it and I'm trying to figure out a setup that will make the fireworks look good and still pull in the city lights. I also saw your balloon movie and your getting some great exposures at night/twilight. Thanks in advance for any help.

Best,

Mark
