Shooting Checklist

As I am learning this new camera, I put together a shooting checklist for myself to use before every shot.

Can anyone tell me if I've missed something or is my order wrong (btw, I realize this list is pretty anal, but it helps me since I am new to the camera and I thought it might help some other people who are just starting out).

Turn On
Attach Battery or Plug
Insert Cassette
Remove Lens Cover
Power On

Filming
Position Camera
Set White Balance
OIS (on or off)
Zoom (Manual or Servo)
Set Zoom Amount
Focus (Auto or Manual)
If Manual Focus - EVF DTL On
Set Focus
Iris (Manual or Auto)
Set Iris Amount
Check Zebra Pattern
Do I need Gain?
Do I need ND Filter?
Set Shutter Speed
Is Tape Cued Up?
Check Audio Levels
Action

Turn Off
Power Off
Replace Lens Cover
Return Zoom to Manual
Remove Cassette
Remove Battery or Plug

Re: Shooting Checklist

As Jarred has said, check to see that the lens is clean! Dang that is so intuitive, but I've skipped that step before.

Re: Shooting Checklist

As long as you're being as detailed as all that, how about checking your battery charge?

Re: Shooting Checklist

make sure the scene dial is on the right setting.. although I just tape mine down now.

Re: Shooting Checklist

Don't forget if the tape record setting is in LP vs SP mode. I was shooting a scene one and after shooting realized that it must have been put into LP mode by mistake.

Re: Shooting Checklist

Making sure the lens is clean is a great one...I got bit by that one once, never again. I also cary with me a dry erase board that I use to slate each shot. I also use it to white balance against.

Re: Shooting Checklist

WB off the Dry Erase? No Glare issues?

I never thought of using one for slate! Thanks for the tip! I love the guerilla way!

Re: Shooting Checklist

Because I film at many different clubs and because each club has different setups, I made a checklist for each club. Sort of like a mini cheat sheet that you wear around your neck.

I made an all access type of badge/pass that I wear attached to a lanyard around my neck. On one side of the badge / backstage pass I have my business logo printed on it. On the opposite side I have my checklist printed.

I have different checklists for different types of gigs and even gig locations. When I'm asked to film at a club, I refer to my checklist / badge for that particular club then clip it to my laynard.

Sometimes if its a big shoot where I have to bring my seperate audio rig, I'll clip a few checklists to the lanyard, one for camera checks only and one for audio rig setup checks.

One thing I would ad to your list is, when using a tripod check for levelness as soon as you clip the camera on.

Hope this helps.

Re: Shooting Checklist

I have never really had a glare problem WB with the dry erase...I also use warm cards every now and again.

waycooljr- I like your lanyard idea! Well done! At big festivals, it's also a good idea to put band/stage/times info on the lanyard also!

If you don't have a business logo, just make you own VIDEO CREW pass ;D

Re: Shooting Checklist

The great thing about this board is the reduction of humilation you get with anonimity...

What does EVF DTL On mean in the following line:

If Manual Focus - EVF DTL On

Thanks

That means that if I have manual focus turned on to make sure I turn on EVF DTL as well to help assist with manual focus.

Re: Shooting Checklist

EVF DTL is a feature only on the new A DVX100.

As for WB off the slate.. make sure you light the slate, as slates change color from white to grey depending on how much light is on it.. you wont get consistent results.
