Shooting black & white in camera

So I was wondering how to go about setting a dvx100 to record in black and white. I know it's general consensus that desaturating should be done in post. However, I'm shooting with a Hoya 87 Infrared filter over the lens. When I capture the footage in Final Cut, there is some visible artifacting which I'm assuming is from the excess of red in the footage. I heard digital doesn't do to well with red. So I thought that shooting black & white in camera could bypass this. Good/Bad idea?

There's no way to do it in camera. You have to do it in post.

Shooting with a red filter is about the same as using only the red channel in post. It's probably not necessary.

Thanks David. I'm actually trying to create a look as similiar as possible to IR photography. I didn't think that using only the red channel would recreate some of the visual characterisitics found in IR. Is there any way to clean up the blockiness caused by DV's inability to deal with red in post, or am I screwed?

Thanks, Ill give that a try. Is there a significant loss in detail? I've tried a channel blur before and the detail went to ****.

No. It just blurs the edges between contrasting colors. Which, in DV, is pretty much red and everything else.

hmm....adding red in post i dont think would do anything. if you actually look through a red filter you can see how the shadows are brighter, the whole image is more b&w "ready". i would guess that you just shouldnt use a filter, it will kill your compression. ive had problems lately with white balancing for a warmer picture, but red is killin it
