shooting archival photographs

I need to include some archival photos in a film I am working on - Being shot on DVX and will be transferred to 35mm later. I will want both stills of the photos and pans around them. What is the best way to handle this. Should I shoot it all on the DVX now, or scan the photos and do it all in post? If so, what resolution scanner do I need?

Re: shooting archival photographs

Scanning the photos will require more from your rendering machine to get it to look right, but it will have a lot more flexability in the way you're able to use the photos.

I would expect any good quality 1200-2400 dpi flatbed photo scanner would work fine, depending on the size and condition of the originals.

You could go as far as getting drum scans, but it would be complete overkill when used in the DV codec.

Overkill's too light a word...overmassacre...?

Essentially you need a file size that's much larger then DV frame size to do pans and zooms and all the assorted still motion stuff. If your photos are 3x5 and larger...then a 600 dpi scan is plenty I would think.
