Shooting a Short Advice

I will be shooting a short this weekend that we will be Editing on Xpress Pro no Mojo. I would like to shoot at 24P Advanced. I understand that I cannot output 24P or 24P advanced, but I can edit it, just not see on my monitor without Mojo a 24P project. Would it be best for me to shot in 24P Advanced mode then edit in 30i mode or in 24p mode? If i DO edit in 24P mode, how do I finish the project. Can I edit in 30i then edl everything in a 24P project later?

Also, I'd like to shoot widescreen, but not 16x9. Should I just shoot with the widescreen mode (bars on top and bottom) or in the squeeze mode and edit in 16x9. I am not concerned about having this viewable for people on Widescren monitors, it will be mostly viewed on 4:3 monitors, but I like the widescreen shape ratio.

thanks for any advice.

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

If you are editing in a 30i project in order to output back to DV then 24pN is probably better, but you can certainly edit either 24pA or 24pN in a 30i sequence. If you want to future protect your footage for a 24p native editing session in the future, then shoot 24pA.

You will have less hassle if you just want the look of widescreen to either apply a 16:9 mask in the Avid, or shoot with the bars.

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

I have a few more questions, just to clarify.

If I shoot in 24PA mode, will I still get the 24FPS feel? even if I edit in 30i timeline? OR do I need to edit in 23.97 and then export out to DVD or something?

Also, with the Widescreen, I would ultimately like to be able to put this to DVD and have it playback on a widescreen TV with no bars, and on a 4:3 tv with bars on top and bottom. I read on here that if I shoot in the squeeze mode I can then edit in widescree and flag it in squeeze and then the DVD will know how to switch it. Correct?

Ultimately, I want the 24fps look, and the widescreen look also. I'm guessing that shooting 24P and editing in a 30i timeline sort of defeats the purpose? What would you suggest?

sorry for all the questions, I am new to this whole 24P thing.

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

Shooting in 24pA will still give you the "film look" when editing in a 30i project.

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

So what's the advantage of editing in a 24P timeline as opposed to a 30I timeline? I mean is 24p only for matching to film?

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

It has advantages in several areas:

When compositng, it ensures that all frames align with each other rather than deal with pulldown frames and have to do 2:3 removal and insertion for Fx editing.

Allows for a continous cadence on output which allows for easier color correction in a da vinci suite from the output

Allows for progressive 24p DVD to be created where you can get 20% more storage or increased quality for the same duration sequence

Better workflow when going back to film

Re: Shooting a Short Advice

Thanks Michael for all your help on this. I think I have figured out a good workflow, I have done some experimenting with the DVX100 and done some editing in 24P mode and output to DVD Progressive mode (looked at some of your other posts and took your advice on the Squeeze settings) and everything is looking great. I have a few more questions I want to make sure I am doing right as far as workflow.

If I edit in a 24P timeline and I want to do some titles in AE or other compositing effects is there anything special I need to know as far as settings in AE? I assume my Composition should be set to 23.97 correct? Do I need to let AE do any sort of pulldown or just set it and forget it and let Avid interrpret that footage when it comes into Avid? Also, I'm sure I can check for this in an AE forum, but since I will be shooting in widescreen squeeze mode, what do I need to set my composition size at in AE?

Also, can I edit in a 30i timeline (so I can use a client monitor since I don't ahve mojo) and then import an edl into a 24P timeline and reimport the footage that way after i have hte picture locked?

The progressive output to DVD out of Avid (by way of Squeeze) looks great. I shot some samples in hte Widescreen Sequeeze mode and flagged it and checked it on a widescreen tv and regular tv and it worked great.

thanks for all your help.
