Hi,
I have to shoot a plasma display (with X-box attached) and wondered whether anyone had had experience with doing this or can tell me whether 24p or 24p advanced is going to run into any problems here. I'm hoping it's like an LCD and isn't going to give me any bars or artifacting.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Shooting a plasma display

An LCD monitor won't give you any problems like the 'bars' or anything like that. But because of the 24P camera being out of synch with the (assumingly) 60i graphics form your X-Box, odds are it won't appear as truly smooth footage...it would give a similar look to rendering a 60i video clip as a 24P clip, without the pulldown...so it would be a little jittery because of the dropped frames.

But that's all minor stuff...the footage should look fine otherwise (like you're shooting an LCD monitor :D)

Re: Shooting a plasma display

i just did some shots from a laptop screen.. and got some ugly wavy artifacts. it appeared to get harder as i was in sharp focus.. (and why wouldn't i be in sharp focus..) taking it slightly out of focus helped in some cases, but of course, not recommended as a solution.

Re: Shooting a plasma display

Thanks. Yes, with an LCD you can get wavy detailing artifacts in close (as can happen with a CRT). I'm not shooting the plasma display tight at all. I think it's going to be fine.

Re: Shooting a plasma display

There are wavy artifacts?? I've never had the problem with that...(then again, I've only ever had an LCD in frame WHEN it was in the background, I've never done a close-up on it.)

Re: Shooting a plasma display

Are you talking about moire patterns? If so, that's not an artifact of the display, it's a result of shooting something that's higher-resolution than the television can resolve. Do you see those "wavy artifacts" when playing back the video on a computer screen, or only on a television?

Re: Shooting a plasma display

I shot my rear-projection HDTV showing a 480p movie without a problem. It was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure the only thing I had to do was set the proper syncro-scan.

Re: Shooting a plasma display

I don't think the artifacts are just moire. My understanding (though suspect here) is that the screen is not in actuality a flat surface to be focused upon, and that throwing the shot out of focus to make it sufficiently distinct is a very useful solution. I have shot a lot of LCDs and CRTs with the lens flush up against the glass (and a fisheye on the camera), and I've fone by what looks best on a NTSC monitor on set.

That having been said -- has anyone pointed a 24p camera at a plasma display?
Thanks!

Re: Shooting a plasma display

So, just to follow up --
the plasma screen was no problem with the Xbox graphics playing. I did notice a bit of flutter in edges when in 24p or 24pa that disappeared in 30p (as was predicted by Mike_Donis.
Thanks!
