shooting a concert

hello!
we need to shoot a concert (we have two ex1 camcorders) and we dont have a mixer.
our question is: how to synchronize two cameras so in the editing program i can use the sound from one of the camecorders but the video from both of them....
please help me! Wish you creative success!
thank you :)

What helps me in post, is to load both clips, and find a singular moment to use as your landmark, i.e. "Hello Cleveland!". Then you trim and go from that point. I use Premiere, so I can load one clip over top of the other, and nudge them until the audio waveforms match up.

I would also like to add, if you are going to do concerts and such, it really helps to get a multi track mixer/recorder. I use a 10 channel Roland that cost me maybe $300 used, and I can run each channel int a separate track from the sound board. For smaller gigs, I can run the vocals into the mixer allowing for a cleaner sound.

hi DAN1,

i may be stating the obvious but just in case..... "do not" stop ***recording*** once you click "record". if the show is longer than one SxS card can handle then try to get another card to continue un-interupted since the recording process will automatically switch to the second slot and continue recording without a hitch. if you can do this then there will be only "one" synching effort made and the rest will just flow.

Capt Quirk gives a good suggestion about trying to get individual tracks from the show but if the sound guy isnt cooperative enough to give you those individuals "outs" then at least try to get "some kind of direct board mix" at minimum to be able to blend in somewhat. usually board mixes arent very balanced because some instruments are louder off stage and then softer in the FOH mix....but, something would be better than nothing to mix in with the "room sound" it seems you will be getting.

good luck!

p.s. dont run the EX-1 levels to hot and definitely into the red. the sound get very unpleasant if you do.

I watch the conductor's baton and match the motion in all of the cameras to find the exact frame to synch all cameras. In rock concerts, there are tons of flash bulbs going off. They also make excellent synch events.

sync on a flash, lighshift or simular.. light travels faster than sound if the stage is big.

Also.. I recommend that you incooperate the multicam feature in Final Cut Pro.. it is awsome on these kind of jobs =) Will save you hours in editing.

Good luck
