shooting a 24 fps look with the AF100 and AJA Ki Pro Mini

I recently picked up a AJA Ki Pro Mini to capture at 422 via SDI. A client for an upcoming job asked if it can record a 24 look onto the prores files at 29.97.

The AJA box is new gear for me, so I haven't shot much with it yet. I plan to run tests myself, but wanted to ask around here to see if anyone had any input.

This was his question:

"Can you shoot with a 24 look onto prores files at 29.97?
In other words…can you set the AF100 to shoot at 23.98 but the external box (cards) to record at 29.97?"

SDI outputs 59.94, whether it's 59.94i in 1080 or 59.94p in 720. I suppose 1080/59.94i would be considered "29.97" in the sense that 60i usually is, which is as a matter of timecode only, but as 720, it's 60p. So yes, you can shoot 24p and have it output in that 59.94 stream and it'll still retain the 24p "look."

If you're looking for actual 30p, it doesn't do it.

Ugh… I hate that whole "24 look" thing that comes up. It's more of a temporal feel than a visual style. Some producers know just enough technical jargon to become royal PITAs (rather than the usual run of the mill PITAs) ;-p

Yes, you can do exactly what you're asking. Put the camera in 1080/24p mode, and turn SDI out to "on", and turn "24PsF" to off. That way the camera will output 24p with a 2:3 pulldown in a 59.94 signal (aka "29.97"), and the Ki Pro will probably capture that as "29.97". However, you'll have to check in the Ki Pro to see if it has automatic pulldown removal; it might be smart enough to record that as a native 23.98 file, which would seem to defeat what your client wants. Of course, if your client really DID want 23.98, then you could just set the AF100 to output "24PsF" and the Ki Pro Mini will (probably) record that as a native 23.98 file.

What is recorded by the Ki Pro Mini depends entirely on how the Panasonic AG-AF100 is configured in terms of it's SDI output. If you elect to output 1080PsF 23.98 from the camera, that is what the Ki Pro Mini will record. If you elect to output 1080i 29.97 from the camera, that is what the Ki Pro Mini will record.

If you have Ki Pro Mini operational questions, don't hesitate to contact AJA Technical Support. The assistance is provided free of charge and they can be reached Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm PST via phone or email.
