Shooting 4:3 with the HVX

I have a project coming up at the end of the month; I just sold my DVX100b on eBay and am going to buy an HVX. The problem is I was going to wait a few more weeks until I plunk down the cash. The project is going to be a basic corporate "happy face" video that needs to be shot in good ol 4:3 SD. I was thinking of using my friends DVX But I am wondering what the quality of the HVX is in SD 4:3 mode. Since not all of the chip is being used does this impact the image quality/light sensitivity? If any of you have shot in a similar scenario I would like to get your feedback. Thanks

I've actually not yet shot SD with my HVX but I have heard that the images on it are better than the DVX. Maybe not extremely noticable but a bit sharper. Also, correct me if I'm wrong guys, but you can shoot in 4:2:2 color space (giving the colors a bit more pop) than the standard for the DVX which is 4:1:1. Hope that helps.

What the Green Barry said, and to answer the question about sensitivity - the HVX in SD is still significantly less sensitive than the DVX.

When I shoot SD (well, interlaced SD) with both, I always prefer the DVX for both light handling and image quality - well, not image quality, exactly, but something about motion quality...

speaking of 60i and 30p. Lets say I use the FS100 and shoot in DVCPRO50 30p mode. When the footage is brought into FCP can I intercut the clips with DVCAM footage shot on a PD170 60i? When the project is finished will I need to convert the project to 60i if it is being printed to DVCAM? thanks in advance

Yes you could intercut it, no you won't have to convert it. But the PD170 footage will look very different, it'll have the "live" look instead of a filmish look.

thanks berry, one more question. You mentioned that if I were to shoot in 60i that the DVX may be a better solution. Can you elaborate on why that is. thanks

DVX is two stops faster (4x brighter) in 60i than the HVX is. And HVX does some aliasing/stairstepping in 60i that's very visible in angled lines etc., doesn't look very good. DVX is cleaner in that regard.
