Shooting 1080i/ 24PA

So I just found out that I could shoot at the 1080I/24PA setting a then drop the interlaced in post. Two questions, is it worth it? And how do I get rid of the interlaced in Final Cut?

log and transfer, make sure u have the little button in preferences "remove advanced pulldown/duplicate frames"

it will take off the AVP, and give u ur true 24 frames. it's been discussed before, u gain roughly 25% more image shooting in this mode, and if u downsample back to 720p, it will give you a better looking 720p than if u shot natively at 720, due to the properties of downsampling.

i've shot a full short in this way before only switching back to 720p for slow motion. exported it out as pro res full 1080p, and put on HDCAM to play on a movie theater screen. looked sharp and amazing. say yes i'd recommend it, even if ur final is gonna be 720p.

drawback, eats up more hard drive space.

To clarify, the vertical resolution of progressive vs. interlaced (24p or 30p vs. 60i) can be up to 25-30% higher. So, 24p, 24pA, and 30p will all be the same.

If you didn't remove the pulldown, you'd still have the same resolution advantage, because the underlying footage is still progressive. But you do want to remove the pulldown, because you want to work with the native 24p frames. :)
