Shoot35 follow focus on my FS100

Thought i'd show off!

Thanks Wayne from Shoot35 for all the info and help. Ordered on Tuesday and delivered on Thursday when I was expecting a 5 day waiting time! Not bad at all! Pulling focus is easy and it was a simple setup. The only downside I can see so far is that the speed crank is a bit noisy, a bit like something is loose on the crank. Also you can here the lens moving (probably my lens). Might be my setup knowledge or lack thereof so I will tinker some more and see what i can do about the sound issues.

Hey,
Yes it's the cine baseplate. I bought the cinefocus bundle that came with the baseplate. I think it worked out more cost effective that way. I'm happy with it. Why do you ask? Have you heard bad things about the cinefocus baseplate?

I have the same plate... or... I bought it when it was called the AF100 plate. It's execellent in my book. Haven't had a single issue with. For follow focus though I bought a cheap one from chinabay... that will teach me how to cry once ;)

Hows the play in the focus? I just got a lanparte one (after some web reviewing check, it seemed best bang for buck) and i'm using with the same lens as you have. I find there is some play when you change direction. So focus one way, then turn the other way and there is a moment with no movement. I have limited experience with FF units. I don't think this is backlash, because i believe that's when you stop then it and it settles back. It seem pretty good for that.

When it's off the lens then is no play, seems really robust.

I do wonder whether the play is coming from the rubber teeth band around the lens deforming from one way as it's pulled the other. The lens itself has no play in the focus ring (unlike the SAL8514Z)

So how is it performing for you?

cheers
Paul

@paul

I've got the Lanparte one as well and I've found that tighter ringed lenses are no good for the zip ring.
If you invest in a pair of the larger plastic ones (i.e: the ones which screw into the side) you'll find that the "play" is gone.

You're spot on that unfortunately it's just the nature of the rubber gear rings and the fact that they have a bit of "stretch" to them.
If it helps at all, none of my Canon or Nikon lenses have this problem, but if I swap over to a Zeiss set I get stepping.
The gearbox itself is top notch and has to definitely be one of the best I've ever had at that price point.

Basically second everything Josh just said. Can't emphasize enough how much better the screw in plastic non-zip type rings are!!! Ive been using a friends lanparte as well and it really is awesome!!!

That's great to hear, the unit does seem pretty solid itself.

When you say plastic do you mean the ones that stand out from the barrel on screws? Or the same sort of ones that go round the surface but are just plastic not rubber?

Any recommendations?

cheers
Paul
