Shoot Flat.......change In Post???

Im overwhelmed with "settings" for different situations. Im wondering if it would be best just to shoot, then experiment with "looks" in post.....what is the drawback to this method?

(Pardon me if my English is not understandable...Im from Kentucky)

If I shoot with factory settings in F5, with good focus, gain, plenty of light etc....in other words good video, couldnt all other parameters be changed in post using the effects of PP2, magic bullett etc? Would this be as effective as changing the settings during the shoot?

Your opinions please,
Jeff

Yes you have more control in post, but DV footage isn't forgiving to changes. If you can get the look in camera, do it that way.

But a lot of it is personal preference.

Yeah... what they've said. Gain = BAD

and it come's down to personal preference. I shoot relatively flat, but steer just a bit towards a look in camera, then do the rest in post.

Getting reds in my shot [my fav color] has prevented me from trying to get it "in camera" for me. I need a little post for the way I shoot now.

As you gain more experience with the camera, you will get used to getting close in camera, and then finishing in post. I hardly ever leave the image alone in post, no matter how close I get it.

just to add to this question.

If you shoot HD with the HVX200 (using the DVCPRO codec ofcourse), does this footage handle change better?

thanks,
Derrick

Jeff, it's really up to you whether you want to spend some time getting the shot right with good lighting, camera angle and white balance, etc. or you like spending hours and hours in front a a computer trying to make gold out of a Sow's ear. ( Your English is fine, but I'm bilingual) In my opinion the editing software is just that . . . for editing. You should have all of your shots prepared and executed as best as possible. Your camera will love it and so will you.
