i will be shooting a dance programe on stage ,please do you have any suggessions on what mode i need to record , shutter speed , or any thing that can affect the quality of recording
It depends on lighting. Just remember that if you shoot progressive, you loose about a stop of light. As for shutter, keep it at off, unless you need a specific look. If you need gain, don't punch it more the 6db (3db max if you can). Do a proper white balance, but if you can't, use the 3200K preset, it should work out fine with stage lights. Do some camera test before the show to avoid unpleasant surprises. But most importantly, do sound checks if you're going to hook up to the house sound system.
Are you going to shoot multicam? If so, and if you have all DVX100B, copy your settings and jam sync your timecode. You'll avoid some headaches in post. If you don't have all the same cams, use a photographer's flash to sync your cams.
I shot a dance show last friday. A friend was in it and I shot mostly just to test. Wasnt hired and it didnt matter if I actually got anything.
I shot at about 24Pa at f1.7 and after the first couple numbers I kicked the shutter up to 1/60. Actually, let me clarify. I only think I "kicked it up" to 1/60. I dont know what it runs at when shutter is "off". So I SET the shutter to 1/60.
Long story short, edited, burned to DVD and on the DVD, the dance footage is just a bit soft and when paused, there is always blurring in movement. Next time I shoot this I will definitely increase the shutter speed to get some crisper motion.
The tape is GREAT, and no one would ever notice it, certainly not a parent, but I notice it.
Also, a side note. I had my DVX100B set up with big tripod and head, big IndieSnap HD MatteBox on the front, a 7" widescreen monitor clamped to a leg of the sticks and a Varizoom Stealth PZFI clamped to the head handle. The guy hired to shoot the event was off to the other side with his GL2 on a consumer tripod. The person in charge of the event came over to give me the paycheck for video coverage. Made me smile. "I'm just covering this as a favor for one of the dancers." HA! Should've given her a business card.
