Shogun or 7Q for the A7s?

I am going to drop the money on one now but I am not sure which route to take.

Please help me choose, Thank you

Particularly these forums you'll find more 7q+ support as they even have a rep that frequents here. If you can, try both and see what you like. As for me I went with the shogun and have not really regretted it (dislike the plastic build though). But I've never tried the 7q+, but I'm sure in no time they'll chime in.

Owning both for a while, I must say that the O7Q+ is a real Pro mature piece of gear. And the Odyssey a Prosumer with a lot of problems, I sent mine back and got a second Odyssey instead. I never was able to record a long time w/o some bad frames with the Shogun, I tried 4 different recommended SSDs. I have never had even one bad frame with my Odysseys.

The Shogun is plasticky but really quite a nice monitor. I am sure at some point they will get the firmware working right. But they really need to figure out what drives to recommend or maybe sell their own. The problems come as the SSDs get almost full. Or if they have been in a computer and not been reformatted before recording. I just can't recommend the Shogun as a dependable recorder at this time.

Olof,

the SSD's for the Odyssey never gave you problems? Are the SSD's universal for the 7Q?

About the SSDs, I've yet to have any issues on cheap kingston 120gb drives. 4k HQ recording at that, but there are certainly reports of people having issues with some SSDs (if you check their site, they've actually changed recommended drives probably since you owned one olof).
7Q+ drives are proprietary, Joe, so they're more expensive, but guaranteed to work.

As an (ex)owner of the 7Q, which is now the 7Q+, and a brand new owner of the shogun, shooting on the a7s it really is a bit of a toss up.

The shogun definitely doesn't feel as sturdy... but its smaller size and built-in battery bracket are much more pleasing to work with. But I did have corrupt data on it... even with CD SSDs!
I think its the firmware here, not so much the drives. Would explain why some people are having great luck with cheap drives.
On the shogun you have options of all flavours of ProRes, which has been helping with hard drive space since we were covering an exhibition for 5 days.
It also comes with A LOT of accessories when the 7Q+ has none (aside from the drives they are offering with it currently). The usb 3.0 reader, as well as a fair battery, are extremely useful to just get going.
It has absolutely no issues staying powered with sony batteries.

The 7Q+, even tho its a 720p display... somehow feels crisper and I enjoy focusing with it more. The biggest drawback for me, comes in post... since the 7Q+ requires you to use their CDprorestransfer tool and just feels like an extra step when you want to quickly be skimming through the footage (everything is in folders). Even though you have multiple mounting and battery options... I sort of don't like this approach since you have to really figure out whats best for the shoot and make sure to have what you need.
The 7Q+ comes with a full size to mini HDMI adaptor... but the thing is basically garbage and very unreliable. The shogun would keep a signal and not drop, but the 7q+ would more than it should. Using a mini to micro HDMI cable would help a bit, but the connection is very flimsy. And already being pretty poor out of the a7s, i don't really feel comfortable with it.
It has a lot of issues with voltage with sony batteries, even tho its not decoding a raw signal like the fs700.

Image quality I have not noticed a difference, and really there shouldn't be as the source is the same and the end codec is the same (well, on the high end).

Here's how we had the 7Q+ setup:

Here's how we had the shogun. Notice that I'm using a CD drive... which unfortunately doesn't fit into the cases.
