FS7: Shogun instead of Sony FS 7 back.

I've been thinking of getting the Atomos shogun instead of the FS 7 back. It seems that I'd get a recorder, a monitor, Apple Pro res, and a format that will play nicely with Avid. This is for about the same price as the Sony back.
Much cheaper media then the internal cards. Plus I can use it on other cameras. This seems like the way to go. Love to hear others thoughts on this.

It would seem to be a good choice, along with the Odyssey 7Q.

I hope that Atomos solves the 4k to HD HD-SDI downscaling issue before it is release.

You'll still need the XDCA-FS7 back if you want SDI 4K or high frame rate HD.

Yeah, Shogun would be able to do 4K from the HDMI and 1080p from SDI. But no RAW (without the XDCA) or RAWtoProRes like the Odyssey7Q.

Also note that Shogun shipments have not yet begun owing to last minute firmware change. Atomos hopes to have orders fulfilled by Dec 25.

Genlock, timecode, RAW, ProRes and the ability to easily strap on a 90 amp hour battery aren't important?! And then there are those pesky HDMI connectors on a recorder (not an EVF) which I would have thought would be a dealer breaker for most. To each their own.

Well, if the ONLY objective is to get prores, then it's fine.

Though now you HAVE to use an external monitor and power it, and you must use HDMI. The bonus is, you get a 1920x1080 monitor with LUT support to go with it.

The Sony XDCA means you can use internal media if you want, plus you get all those I/O ports. But you HAVE to use an external brick battery, and the whole unit gets significantly bigger, which is not ideal for a lot of people.

Give-and-take as usual.

I, for one, am actually planning on a Shogun for the A7S, because it would make that camera a better match for the FS7. I did a two-camera FS7/A7S shoot tonight that suddenly made me realize how much I wanted the A7S to have monitoring LUTs and 4K.

Thanks for the input on this. Most of my shoots involve 2+ hours of footage and will be edited on the Avid in HD so the lower cost of the media is a factor. Also I believe the DNxHD will work well with Avid. Does anyone know if AVCI works on Avid? Don't think so, not yet.
On another note.... Does the FS7 record 10 bit in the MPEG 2 format to the cards? If not then the Shogun would have that advantage as well. Again thanks for any insight.

Pretty sure MPEG2 is only is only 8-bit in the XDCam format. It has an option for 422 colour sampling though.

Also, I'm not sure it has been confirmed what the recording options for the Shogun via HDMI are going to be. All I've read from Atomos is "possibly 4K".
