FS5: Shogun Flame using HDMI

Hello everyone,

I bought an FS5 and a Shogun Flame recently. And something is not quite clear to me concerning the ProRes that the shogun record. Here's what I know :

Internally, the FS5 record 1080p in 422 10 bits and 2160p in 422 8 bits.

Now, recording with the Shogun using HDMI (No RAW upgrade yet), I have no Info about the codec that I get. Does the Shogun Flame record all resolutions in 422 10 bits ?

Thanks for your help,

Jeremy

As far as I know, it records internally in 2160p in 420 8bit only.

The issue is not the Shogun, but the FS5. As far as I know the external output by HDMI is 8bit 420 only - for all UHD and 4K resolutions. Even the FS7 delivers only 10bit 422 by HDMI up to UHD 25p/30p.

So a solution could be to invest in the FS5 raw upgrade. BUT then you have the next issue I think. The Shogun Flame has no SDI, and I think the FS5 delivers the Sony raw via SDI only. So what could work is if you invest in the FS5 raw upgrade, and then switch from the Shogun Flame to the Shogun Inferno. Sorry, that are not good news I think - and if I am wrong here I ask all the other guys to correct me. But that is what I have in mind.

Although Wolfgang is perfectly right about the HDMI output being 8bit 420 only (in all frame rates on FS5, and above 30fps on FS7) - but IMO, Shogun (Flame or Inferno) will always record 10bit 422 files (in Prores or DNxHR). But of course all this extra information is "empty" - so at the price of bigger/and higher bitrate files you will still be watching them as if 8bit 420...

Not sure why you say that. Flame most certainly has SDI in/out. Granted, standard Flame has just one set of those...

You are right, my error. And more, since it has SDI the flame is also capable to record Sony raw via SDI with 11-12bit 422 both to raw but also to true 10bit ProRes, up to UHD 30p. But you will require the raw update for the camera and you must use SDI for that, otherwise you end up by HDMI with 8bit only (even if the bits may be filled up with zeros since ProRes is 10bit, but that does not add much value).

Great! :) 30-50 cm should be long enough for the cable I think. And also think about how to fix the recorder to the camera in a flexible way. A magic arm can be a geat idea.
