shift of focus

Hi all,

I am filming with EX1 and try to create a shift of focus effect...unsuccessfully... basically I wish to shift the focus between two people who are placed at a distance of 5meters from each other.
As a general rule I film at F4 to f5.6, with preference to the later.
The only way i managed to make it was approaching one for an Extreme CU and then shift the focus, the aperture on 2.8, the result was little satisfying as the face appeared too bright and the frame so so.
When I place at a distance everything is on focus.

Any advice is highly appreciated.

This is not the EX-1 section of the forum. Open the iris up as wide as you can, use the built in ND filter if it gets too bright, go really far back so you can zoom in as far as the camera allows and still get the framing you want. This should give you pretty shallow DOF with the EX1 stock lens (I was able to say, get a persons face in focus but their shoulder somewhat out of focus, etc, when using this method...it's not as good as you get with 35mm camera lenses but it's still decent.)

Get further away from them and zoom in. 100 mm or so. And use less light so you're forced to shoot with wider aperture so you get a smaller depth of field, because that's what you need.
