Sherlock Holmes

This movie is getting a lot of good word of mouth. Has anyone seen it yet?

It beat out Avatar this weekend, I have always liked Robert Downey Jr. from the old Less Than Zero days, glad he was cast in Iron Man.

EDIT: never mind, Avatar beat it this weekend. It's going to have some long legs.

Another Hollywood movie on how to get rid of the original essence that made a true classic, and transform it on a 2 hour action sequence that could well be some other Bond like film.

I fell asleep for 10 minutes on the first half hour and I only regret waking up after that just to see more of the same Hollywood stuff that those guys accustomed us to...

I thought this was mildly entertaining but instantly forgettable. Guy Ritchie threw everything but the kitchen sink into this movie but forgot to include the one thing that should be essential to a good Sherlock Holmes story, a compelling mystery. You know who-dun it for the entire run of the film, the only mystery is what exactly the villain is up to. In the end, as the above poster mentioned, its just another Bond-like world domination plot. Downey and Jude Law were both good in their roles and had real chemistry, and there are some fun individual scenes, but they don't add up to an effective whole. Rachel McAdams seemed a bit out of her depth, although cute as hell. The cinematography was also a bit dark for my taste. I'm not a fan of this low contrast, groping for detail night-time look a lot of DP's are doing these days. It's hard to watch for extended periods even if it's more realistic. I liked some of Guy Ritchie's stylistic touches, especially the fast-forwards and rewinds, and don't mind that they made him a bare knuckle brawler (especially since he used his brains as much as his brawn). The elements are there so maybe with a better, more deliberative script and not so much mindless action this franchise could amount to something. Judging by the box office a sequel seems virtually guaranteed.

I saw it last weekend, but you guys dont want to know what I thought of it. (something about having RDJ for dessert...)

That part aside, I thought the onscreen chemistry between RDJ and Jude Law was as good as Butch and Sundance ever was. Very good pairing. The effects were used really well, imo. They could have gone over the top on so much of it, but I thought it was all perfectly balanced to create that place to lose yourself in the story. Flashbacks and slow motion, while sometimes annoying in other hands, worked really well and flowed right along. (slow-mo fight sequences were brilliant, but that brings me back to having dessert)

If you're a fan of the books, you're not going to like this much.

However, if you're a fan of Young Sherlock Holmes, as I am, you'll find it familiar, if grimmer, more adult, and a bit less intelligent, ground.
