DV Dailies - BitJazz Ships SheerVideo 2.0 Lossless Video Codec
by Mike Washlesky, 12:00 PM CDT, October 26th, 2004

BitJazz Inc. has released a new version of SheerVideo, bringing it to version 2.0. SheerVideo is a lossless video codec intended to make working with professional quality digital video use less storage and take less time when storing it. The new version includes several new features.
SheerVideo offers on-the-fly coding and decoding, while maintaining all of the video information present in raw footage. The company says it is 100% lossless, while still reducing file size.
Version 2.0 of this codec adds 10-bit channels, an optional alpha channel in all formats, gamma tracking, and interconversion between all standard pixel formats.
The company has also added a technology called Synchrony that can convert images between RGB spectral formats and Y'CbCr video formats, formats used in professional video production.
You can find more information about the SheerVideo 2.0 release at the BitJazz Inc.Web site. SheerVideo is available for US$149.95.

Re: SheerVideo Lossless Codec

Just curious about something related to codecs. Many times when I've attempted to export using none, animation, or something with less compression, my driver isn't fast enough to play the information. With Sheervideo, will it be?

Re: SheerVideo Lossless Codec

Liquiddigital,

I'm not sure of the exact specs, but I believe that the new Sheervideo codec is designed to work on as many systems as possible, so if you can use a 'regular' DV codec (Mainconcept, DVSoft, etc.) Sheervideo should work for you! :P

P.S. I use Adaptec's DVSoft codec. Anyone here have a preference? Or do you just use what's 'given' with your editing software, etc?

Re: SheerVideo Lossless Codec

so is this the same as using sorenson and creating .mov out of it?

Re: SheerVideo Lossless Codec

Sheervideo, Microcosm..etc like other Lossless codecs are not used for playback, they are used for storage or for bridging from one app to another.

They aren't very usefull when using DV25 material.

Re: SheerVideo Lossless Codec

Yes, this is what you would call storage software- however, if you look on the website, they are planning on bringing out a codec (only for Windows) that will work as a 'Windows media avi codec'....

(This however, might not be as good at compressing...)
