A contiunation of my project on wool production (I have a client for this - not a sheep obsession)

Lots of handheld focus pulling while following the action, also sticks and merlin work

hopefully we are seeing a combination of acceptable shot stability mixed with motivated moves of the camera

5d2, rodeVidMic, 24-105

Shot in two hours,
no crew
no lights
no recce
no sound recordist
no lens changes
less than 16gb of rushes

This is a rough cut that will be merged with

Thanks - the process took a little understanding because it was not occuring in a linear order and it took me a little while to work out that for example "scouring" was the same as "washing" - the opening shots were filmed last for example - I should have spent more time at the begining understaning the process but the machines are only run for short batches so there was big time pressure to hit the ground shooting!

thanks - im really looking for any comments including criticism

the sound track needs some work on the levels IMO

Most excelent work!
You said you used a Merlin, I thought you prefered the Blackbird, or, of course, I may have mis-understood.
Cheers,
Dave

I have modded the the merlin which is easier to modify due to a slightly more modular nature

Really Ive got BlackMerlin or a MerlinBird right now - all will be revealed in time but cannot comment further now

flying an unmodded rig I would go BB I think

Cheers!
A mate of mine has a Merlin which I hope to borrow for my HVX, when / if I stop being a cheepskate and stump up for a 5DII I'll look at the BB. Got big budget items coming up, Car sevice / MOT, Car and Camera insurance, house repair work..... you know the boring but necessary stuff that eats your money!

Greato.

Are you happy with the results overall? I know you're a stickler about any camera movement or jerk, extra shifts, and I still see them even with your current setup. I personally think it's acceptable and quite normal to see this "drift" in handheld work, but are you satisfied with the setup yet?

I doubt I can get the magic carpet smoothness of some of these shots that are moving through halls, etc, but I'm glad these examples have shown that even witha steadi-like system the natural drift of handheld will prevail. I'mma stick to weight and muscle building and just put the steadi-rig money toward something else.

I think there is a fine balance to be struck - shot duration etc

My handholding is beggining to work in a dynamic environment where the subject is moving in the frame

I think some of the handheld shots with FF are cool and I am pleased with some of the moves that follow the action

I really hate those little jerks that jello the whole frame out - IS seems to solve this - I also hate unmotivated camera moves but they are operator error - im not doing those

Some subjects typically static or mechanised items , in this case the close ups of the machinery, or, in other cases, buildings and interviews, just really need sticks I am concluding

Thats why I was not able to go totally tripod free for this lil film

However, the factory was a secure environment (unlike a street or beach) where I could abandon bits of kit safely, so having sticks was not too bad - also I was close to my van so carrying sticks was not too physically taxing (unlike mountain biking into the wilderness with sticks)

its about assessing each situation - probably in this situation I should have done a bit more sticks and spent my time doing fewer shots better

I am trying to get to the point where viewers and paying clients just see the content rather than being jarred or confused by dodgy sound, cuts, camera movement or mis focus

I think many DSLR users are hiding technical incompetence behind calling thier work 'art' or 'indy'

Happy ?

Yes - I would say was a reasonable effort for someone who shot thier first moving images less than a year ago

When my 'rig' is fully finished I will be posting a detailed analysis

A side note - the first thing I did at the location was a test on the flicker of the lighting (50hz) - I was fully tooled up with my EX1 in reserve - there was a possiblity that the 5d would not even cross the start line!

I think it may just be not having much more to shoot than life itself. And usually when there is paid work that's awesome and structured, people do want to share but can't. It sucks!

But good deal. I will tell you that camera operating is a toughy no matter how long you've been doing it. I'm sure any seasoned vet would be able to tear down all of our work.

Me wants to see more handheld.
