Loved the PK 360, I say, whoever uses it in a feature first, wins.

marke your dolly legs and or sandbag them

lock everything down, tilt, rise, etc. exceot for pivot (pan)

make sure you pass your actor in the center of the frame

try to pan at a consistent speed

do two or three takes so you have some different ends and beginnings to try and match.

in youtr NLE, pick close matching frames for the end of one clip and the beginning of another

use a small fade 2 - 4 frames when needed

thats it

Easily my favorite film so far.

Extremely polished. The acting, the lighting, the camera work, were all top-notch.

I am extremely jealous of your talent. :)

Great job,

Chris

Wow. Thank you so much man!

I checked your website out and I'm sure you have nothing to be jealous of.

I'd like to talk to you about your comapny, website, mission, etc. at some point :)

Hey, Here is another thing I hadn't thought of:
I think you should have shown the old guy get splattered, if not even for a SPLIT-Second! Maybe a low side-profile view. Granted, he kills himself w/ a shotgun correct? Okay, so that would be a little hard to pull off. To show a guys head disentegrate, but a man can wish can't he!!

doable ... but from a story standpoint everything is downhill after that and I do think it was important to end with the Mom and Daughter.

you could go back to the bloody aftermath for teh credits ... if I had shot that :)

You're forgetting that I'm not interested in what's good for YOUR story. I WANNA SEE SOME GUTS GODDAMMIT! lol! On a more serious note, I totally know what you're saying. Also, as far as guts go, your's had the most realistic of everybodies.

I gave this piece a high mark also. I loved that the location was so cramped and yet there was so much story in it. The end shot was sweet, tugged at the heart even more than the father dying. Great job.

Thank you. I like the description of the shed being a cramped space with lots of story in it. Its a very small domestic story in a sense. I was trying to think of something I could pull off logistically. I was trying to make it as simple and easy on myself as possible - so that I could make the best film I possibly could. Of course it ballooned to something much more unweildy than I thought, largely due to the makeup which took 3-5 hours out of each day ... live and learn.

Regarding the story though, few have commented on the fact that there is no dialogue, however, and almost no language.

Aside from teh radio DJ, the text of Shed reads as follows

****.

(and later)

No.

LoL,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, good or bad, first off, though I appreciate the kind words.

Do you think dissolves would work outside the Shed? Can't just show the whole take it would be like 50 seconds...but your point is a VERY good one...what do you think about dissolves? Maybe I could try that for the DVD.

Perhaps ONE disolve would be good. The begining of the shot to the end of the shot. At the same time, who says that they have to reach the very end of the yard? You could just show them walking off, they're obviously going somewhere.

But yeah, a dissolve would certainly help the visual storytelling.

Do you mean noise when he hits it with the hammer? There is noise therek, although someone else commented on there not being any -- I think becauise it is right channel only to match the action, and that is somehow fouling things up.

Or do you mean no sound during the shot of the finger... if so... what do you think would work?

As far as animating the finger that is way beyond me at the moment. If this has a life beyond the DVD maybe you could hook me up ... unless its possible to do it before then????? somehow???? someway????
By noise I mean grain. It looks like the finger is photoshopped, because there is no grain movement in the shot.

Perhaps what you did was shoot it, and then just freeze that one frame and held it? That's what makes it look fake, I would definitely stay away from animating it!

In any case, you could take it into AE (or maybe your NLE) and just add some noise. It'll do wonders to help sell the gag.

Nice rockin' smilie.

I think this was the third film I saw, I was really impressed with the color grading. The gore,... whoa.. the flesh sliding off and him hammering his finger off?! very nicely done. The only thing that bothers me is the end where the wound is just out in the open. Its too out there, ya know. I thinking maybe it could be less obivous, because I think that if she was hurt why would she want to endanger her mom... thats if she turns into a zombie. Just thought u should know.. everything else.. thumbs up!

Thanks for the review and dropping by.

You're assuming that the daughters bite is a secret -- they just haven't gotten to "dealing" with her bite yet. I guess its so "out there" as you put it that I thought it would be obvious that its not a secret, just like Dad's wasn't a secret -- at least that was the idea in my little brain.

I'm glad you liked the cc and the gore. Maybe the ending makes sense now? Sorry if it still doesn't work for you.

Again, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to review, good or bad, and I appreciate the kind words.

I'll try that. I like the button of the bug at then end, which also corresponds to them going into the door -- which is another button on the take

Ohhhhhhhhh!!!! Yes, I didn't have a good enough long take, because the there was black plastic behind the crack in the door as it was noon and it was supposed to be night and I kept getting reflection from the interior lights on the plastic, so I had to freeze frame the one millisecon where there is no glare.

I had completely forgotten why I freeze framed it until just now and had mean to9 add motion in the frame but ran out of time for the online version.

I'm sooooooo glad we had this dialogue or I would have forgotten for the DVD

 I learned it from you! I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU(sobs)
(kid lowers head)
(father guiltily closes the lid on the kids marijuana stash)

You're cool as ice, Jack. Don't sweat my comments, I liked your short so much I just tried to find some things for you to work on for next time.

Are you making a Director's Cut of SHED or is this version pretty much everything you shot for on it?

I enjoyed this one . I liked the scene when the mother and daughter left the shed and were out of focus then the bug flew by ..cool !
I was touched by the Father looking through the photo album , reminiscing and crying . WOW!! The ending with the shotgun ..nicely done ..my thoughts were he knew recognized the shotgun , knew what had to be done and he did it . The make up on Dad was well done .
I have watched this 3 times and I still leave feeling for the father ...A very nice film indeed .....Ian....PS ...liked the 360 as well.

It's been almost a week since I saw first saw this film. I have since watched all the others and yet I am still drawn back to this one.

This is a fantastic example of tight storytelling. The craftmanship is wonderful and all the elements (lighting, sound, makeup, blocking, acting, camera placement, etc) are intertwined and used to further the story.

I will be seriously disappointed if this does not win,

Chris

Shed is part of the Sundance Channel / Sci Fi Channel exposure fest online right now (in the wrong aspect ratio :( ).

The winners from each week's heat will get on TV at the end and the winner of the TV show gets to pitch a show to Sundance.

woohoo!

Got your back on that Jack (sundance anyways). Saw that earlier when I was check to see who won the Bloody Mary.RF Eye D (?) heat.

Hey there,
Could you tell me where i could see your movie. I am trying to research and make a pulley system for a shoot in which the camera has to pull up and turn on its axis. i think i could get some ideas how it will turn out by your experience, so far i'm seeing it through the power of my minds eye only, not the most accurate, well it could be. anyway i am also hoping to attach an extension to this contraption with a lighting rig on. ambitious i know but if i don't get working on it my head will explode, or implode hopefully, less mess
If you get the time to point me in the direction, thanks in advance...
Emma
