Sharp non-canon telephoto lens'?

Looking to rent a good telephoto lens for weddings this year. I'd rather it sharper/slow/IS than faster/no is. I barely use it so I'm trying to not spend alot on it.

lensrentals.com has a good amount of inexpensive stuff. A few of the ones I'm looking at that are around $30:

Tarmon 28 - 300 / 3.5-6.3 di VC
Tamron 70 - 300 / 4-5.6 di VC
Canon 70 - 300 / 4-5.6 IS (non L)

or is it worth spending the extra $20 for the Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS?

Sigma telephoto lenses are pretty close to Canon L series lenses in terms of overall performance, and considerably less expensive.

I have the Sigma 120-400 4.5, and its pretty much on par with the Canon 100-400 4.5L series lens (which I have rented) - this is for photography (never used it for video). From 100 to 300 they are pretty much identical, at 400 the Canon seems a little bit sharper, though you really have to crop in on something to see the slight difference. The Sigma also takes a little longer to find focus, and in a very quiet room you can hear the OS motors (Sigmas version of IS). But all in all, it seems good value given the relatively low price and relatively high quality. Built like a tank too.

Here's a suggestion that hasn't be given yet. Perhaps a Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro. It has the Hybrid IS which is great for stabilizing handheld shots, plus it's a very sharp lens.

Are you steering away from Canon because of cost?
