F3: Sharing Some Custom F3 LUTs

Hey all,

Been working today creating a couple of 1d LUTs that you can import into your F3 (if you have the RGB option). I found that the stock LUTS are way too minimalistic and don't create enough contrast to be very useful. So I decided to study up on how to create my own using Sony's CVP File Editor.

The only thing I can edit is the gamma curve, essentially only affecting contrast though slightly improves the saturation as RGB curves tend to do. It adds my curve "over" the s-log curve. The highlights remain at 100% and the midtones and shadows are pulled down considerably. The curve is altered to give a sharper rolloff in the highlights and crush the shadows.

CPF Filmic 1: A gentle shadow rolloff, 18% grey at 30%, Sharper highlight rolloff
CPF Filmic 2: Darker shadows with a harder crush, 18% grey at 32%, A little more gentle highlight rolloff.

How to import into your F3:
  1. In the "others" menu on the F3, go to LUT MEMORY > STORE. This will write your existing LUTS to the SxS card. Insert into your computer's card reader.
  2. Download and unzip: http://crookedpathfilms.com/Sharing/CPF_SonyF3_FilmicLuts.zip
  3. Change the name of the downloaded files to which user lut position you would like (00000001.lut through 00000005.lut).
  4. Drop into the SxS card LUT folder (SONY > PRO > CAMERA > HDCAM). Make sure you overwrite the old files with the new.
  5. Load the SxS back into the F3
  6. Go to OTHERS > LUT MEMORY > select "RECALL"
  7. Your new LUTs are loaded onto your F3.
I'm sure I'll be tweaking these LUTs and when I do I'll post them. Hope some of you can use them...let me know any feedback if you do. :)

For non-RGB option owners using the SLOG picture profile included with v1.4, if you are interested I created a picture profile that will allow you to set your exposure using a "normal" looking image and then switch to the SLOG picture profile when you are ready to record.

This is good if you don't have a way to add LUT to your SLOG but want to set your exposure by histogram or what you see in the VF or LCD.

I can PM you the picture profile settings.. or post them here once I find them. :cheesy:

cheers,
