Hi all,

my F3K didn't arrive yet but I thought I should look arround for what picture profile's people are using. Browsing thrue this forum I couldn't really find any topic where different profiles was talked about and analyzed. Maybe even some test of various profiles like the ones over at the AF100 side of dvxuser.

Not to sound like a jerk, but as a DP, it's your responsibility to know your camera and what it does and what every function in the menu does. Experiment your self and get the look that you want.

Your basically asking someone to work for free and then hand over their hard work and use it for yourself. It takes some bit of time and knowledge to engineer a camera. (Stuff that a professional DP should already know) I enjoy the forums and what they can provide, but I see too many people just relying on the forum to do their work for them instead of doing it themselves or actually learning. If someone shares that's fine, but if your just copying Picture Profiles, shoot and never experiment and try to learn yourself, I m sorry your not a DP, your just a camera op.

Sorry for rant but, the internet has made it too easy, no one wants too make the effort, other than clicking through web pages to see how some else did it.

Look closely at the EX1/3 discussions on settings as they should be very similar, then with that as a starting point do your experiments.

Sharing information is the whole point of these boards, especially with a new camera like the F3 where we can all help each other, even if it's just a jumping off point. We've been doing it here since the early days of the DVX100 ;)

Agreed Pete. I think the issue comes from someone who hasn't even got the camera and they are asking for a bunch of information that comes from some hard learning even before they have a chance to contribute to the discussion and learning with the camera.

To the original poster's question... it is probably best that you simply spend some time with the camera first to understand how changes to the gamma and sharpening effect the image coming out of the camera, play around with the black gamma a bit to understand that, however, I wouldn't go too crazy with setting changes. The camera comes out of the box with pleasing color and some simple changes to the gamma and picture profiles without dialing in color changes will yield a lot of useful settings.

And yes if you can't wait simply jones around the Sony EX forums for picture profile threads just beware that some have gone pretty crazy with changing the color matrixes in their cameras and have created a lot of unintended problems like noise into their video. Sometimes tweaking can be a bad thing.

I know, my apologies Rob, not direct at you personally.
Stems from dealing with someone very recently who was not what they said they were. And could quote web articles all day about camera specs. But when the heat was on, was pretty much useless.
Turned into a very bad day. You understand.

Just bitter I guess, from having to learn the hard way. Before the greatness and ease of forums like this. sorry for the rant, fellas.

Here's some preliminary tweaks Rob, from DVinfo: http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-xdcam-f3-cinealta/492408-pmw-f3-scene-files-first-look.html

Sounds like a nightmare JD. Thanks for the link.
I've learned a lot from the members of DVXUSER over the years.
With the rate that tech is progressing, I see nothing wrong with researching these options before you have the camera in hand.
Let's move on, share some knowledge and figure out how to get the most out of this camera.
Happy shooting to you all.
Pete

No offence taken. And no, I am no DP (at least I wouldn't call myself that). I did however make movies, some for broadcast, since arround 1990. So I do have some knowledge on how cameras works, including EX1/EX3. The F3 is however very different.
The idea was to start a thread like what Alister has done over at DVInfo.
There are many threads for AF100 here on DVXUser that has serveral discussions arround the different settings and findings. Example here. I find it quite useful when I dial in my own AF101, even if my own settings differs some from other peoples.
