Here are a couple of grabs from a new project that I've started working on. Its being shot up in a projection booth so that's why its a little dark.

Most of the light came from the desk lamp and the christmas lights. There was also a 60W bulb in the corner of the room near the ceiling, that would be on the right of the image.

The first shot looks way underlit to me. Can you elaborate on the project and maybe give more context?

the shot of the chick is great! love it!
it's amazing what can be achieved with practicals!

The short takes place up in a projection booth, which if any of you have ever been up there know that its a dark place. Also the short deals with things in the shadows and that people and things come out in the darkness. Disjecta I can see why you said that it looks a little under lit to you. But to me it looks awsome and it really captures how things look up in a projection booth. I shot some footage before these using the overhead fluorescent in the office area. It was much brighter but it looked very flat and I didn't like the color at all. So to me these shots may be a little dark but they capture what I'm trying to show up there. Thanks for the feedback. I'll post the trailer when I get it done. That might be a little bit because I still have some shooting to do.

I worked in a projection booth for a year. Fun stuff haha. There def is creepy **** going on in the darkness. I still remember how many paranormal experiences I had up there. Very freaky.

Chick's cute too. Nice smile.

Empire, your name is kind of funny to me. It was the name of the first theater I worked at and where I got my start as a projectionist, 9 years ago. I'm still a projectionist but I don't see as much creepy **** as I did when I worked at a multiplex. But I still get creeped out every once in a while.

Re: Shards of Darkness (Grabs)

I think they look good but could use more lighting. Without a back light, the characters don't jump out, and without a correct key and fill, their faces don't have any texture. The second one is good, as the motivated light from the lamp works as a key and the ambient light works as fill, but it could definitely use a back light. The first one doesn't look so much underlit as it looks muddy. Use some low key lighting to keep some parts very dark and some parts very bright, and it will look "darker" despite being better lit.

The outdoors is dark at night, after all, and yet Hollywood movies light a lot for outdoor shots. It's not the total brightness of the scene, but the way the light gives the impression of a particular condition. Also, DV tends to look flat so three point lighting benefits it greatly.

Otherwise it looks good though. The framing is nice.
